Nokia N8 Firmware Update Inbound
By Mike Browne on December 20,
 2010 at 00:00,

The Nokia N8 firmware currently stands at version 11.012 but it looks like Nokia N8 owners can look forward to a new firmware update in the New Year. Read on to find out more about the Nokia N8 firmware update being inbound.

Own a Nokia N8? Of course you do, who could resist the 3.5-inch smartphone powerhouse with its 3.5-inch touchscreen. 12-Megapixel camera with HD video recording and HDMI-out port? Then there is the Symbian^3 operating system, which is the most powerful version of the OS to-date, all adding up to a great user experience.

The Nokia N8 received its first major update earlier in the year but it looks like January will be the date when the next major update is due to hit. How do we know? Well, Nokia India posted such a note on its Twitter account.

While there is very little in the way of what the Nokia N8 firmware update will include, it's being speculated that a new browser update will be forthcoming, as well as new QWERTY keyboard and user interface updates.

So, with the Nokia N8 firmware update inbound in January 2011, let us know what kind of enhancements you'd like to see to your Nokia N8, in the Comments below.

    What would I like to see in the update? All the above suggestions would be welcome, though I’d be delighted if they added DNLA/UPnP functionality…

    I know this is said to be on the way in the New Year, though from what I’ve read, it’s unlikely to be within the next couple of months. That said, I wouldn’t complain if they gave us an early New Year present :-)

    #1) I have three imap accounts which i am syncing with every 15 minutes. After a while (sometimes a few hours, sometimes after a few days) i get the error message “fsmailserver: memory full. Close applications and try again”. it then happens whenever new mail gets in or whenever i am sending an e-mail. This N8 has plenty of memory left! When i close all running applications and i also close e-mail, then restart the e-mail application, the message is still there. It also doesn’t ring the normal new-email sound anymore, but gives two short error clicks. Very annoying because now i am not even notified of new e-mail any more when this happens. So that makes the N8 very unreliable for e-mail, which is one of the main aspects of a smart phone anyway!

    #2) Also less annoying is that the IMAP IDLE command doesn’t work correctly because my IMAP connections gets disconnected after 10 minutes idle time. So i have to use regular intervals to sync. With Nokia messaging server this doesn’t happen (tweaked?), but on every linux server (dovecot imap daemon) i have encountered this issue.

    Other N8 features i am very happy with. But #1 is soooooo frustrating!

    Well, I hope Nokia can focus on reducing the lag in the phone. A new user interface will be better and its best not to stick with the old interface of nokia phone.

  • HT

    Nokia pls don’t forget the continuous autofocus on the beast cos I don’t wanna miss the great thing. Thank qqqq…. :) I love the rest.

    I have an N8, and i have many many complaints and i just hope that Nokia will fix it with this Firmware update!!
    Anyways some of the things i would want to see with the new Firmware update is:

    1> 720p recording at 30fps

    2>Full screen photo shoot mode when in 12mp

    3>The multitasking must be improved ( my phone automatically shuts down a few apps some times)

    4>An improved and faster browser

    @ vikram 720p is already at 30fps withe firmware update which is available a month ago and 12mp can’t be in full screen cos it shows the right ration.
    @abhisheka there’s an update for social network like many days ago, u can install it and it’d work perfectly

  • tgc

    I have an N8.
    But hope that the VPN and SIP capabilities can be added just like its E71 model, which I am still holding onto.

  • Denys

    i would like it to be improoved with multitasking , better qwerty keyboard and a bigger space button when in landscape mode . Also few improvments with the stability of the phone and better themes

  • Denys

    also it would be greate if they would finally add cyprus to navigation … its really annoying !

  • Bill

    how about getting rid of the stupid cap on file size transfers to the phones memory.. i mean what is the point in having 16gb when u cant transfer files over 4gb..

  • DandK

    I am an IPhone user but my partner has recently upgraded her phone with the latest all singing all dancing nokia n8 – we can’t believe that nokia can actually get away with selling such a c&@p phone . nothing seems to work as it should – there seems to be adizzing array of menus which eventually get you to a menu that doesn’t quite work. Battery monitor doesn’t work phone struggles to do anything on less than 10% charge. Browser is useless – attempt to replace with opera doesn’t work as phone insists on using the built in garbage. Seriously thinking about a small courts claim against tmobile as they effectively sold us this garbage !!!

    As for update nokia should remove 75% of the features and make the 25% that’s left work well basically turn off the thickphine so at least you can browse Internet send and receive text messages and use the phone with confidence. I hope the designers and software engineers who worked on this are struggling to sleep at night !!!

  • marty

    1> 12MP cannot be taken in full screen mode because of the resolution ratio. please do the maths first before suggesting or demanding for additional features….

    2>nokia is not bound to support a 30fps on 720p. as stated in the sales packages, it only shoots at 25fps.. clearly nokia is not obliged to push the capabilities of the device. by buying the device, the customer already agreed on the features stated in the box or at the device’s website that it only shoots at 25fps…

    3> about the “memory full” issue. its the RAM that is full not the storage memory. a lot of people dont know this… ok, it works like this, everything that u see on your screen is loaded to your RAM, from storage media to RAM…. RAM gets full when theres to many application that is active. try to close applications not deleting data from your device. its hard to explain this in txt… pls just ask a computer expert / teacher regarding this.. he can tell u the difference between the RAM and storage memory… he can perhaps illustrate this to you or even show you the actual products….

    Hi I have a Nokia N8 as well. It is great to have such good camera and stereo on the phone. However, my feeling about the phone is frustration more than anything. The interface is just not straight forward. Maybe just simply copy iphone and Android will be a good choice. Those phones I could just get on with them and use right away, well even just to make phone calls. I have a problem to hang up the phone while I am calling with an extension. i want to hang up with just one action. Also the delay caused me making mistakes as well. I think i have to be in Nokia way of thinking then I can use it well and happily.

    And the social network is limited to the region. Phone bought and used in UK could not show Chinese? Even if I put up with not being able to input Chinese words, I should at least be able to read Chinese and see my Chinese friends’ name on my phone(they are all squares now).

    I am not sure about if the N8 is that popular as what it has been stated on Nokia related website. But my experiences with the phone is not fun and full of frustration. The big part of the reviews are about the camera and many other things rather than the PHONE functions. That is true to me as well. When I simple just use it as video player or map, I feel happy, cuz that is something actually work properly. I have the N8 since Novemver, but I am still using my 2 year old phone as the phone which I feel more comfortable and happy to use.

    I also spend so much energy just to look for solutions to the problems, the multi-language, making the interface easier and more pleasant etc. It should not be like that. I also tried to sell the phone but not too many people were interested and if there was an offer, it was way lower than the stock price. Is N8 really that popular? I really don’t think so. I am stuck with N8.

    However, please improve the user interface and make the phone easier to use. And when think about social network, please think bigger and see what is it like nowadays. Just make it simpler and more intuitive, then that will be a good improvement already!

    There might have been some fix regarding to the problems above that I am not aware of. If there is, I would be grateful if anyone could advise me. Otherwise, I hope that update will be coming and surprise me.

    Kind regards

  • Justin

    I only have the same normal issue tend to have with most nokia’s.

    Firstly, i have had my phone freeze on me numerous times. the most annoying is when your touch screen stops responding.

    Secondly i have had my phone “white screen” on me numerous times…ie phone shuts down and restarts itself

    The third issue i have is a lot of the time the phone is very sluggish. MIght be the 600 odd megaherts processor taking strain or just badly written software.

    what i would love to see in the upcoming update is a possiblity to use my N8 as access point-wireless (router like) as Android 2.2 Froyo can…

  • http://www.quitofilms.com Quito Washington

    I’m actually pretty happy with the N8 as a phone…minus the fact that it’s in the shop, returned soon, because of the shutting down and restarting problem (or not restarting at all for some time)….
    I’ve thought of ways it can be improved but the shooting at 25fps is not really an issue as film runs at 24fps so by shooting at 25, you are actually getting closer to real film than DV (minus the fact you are shooting on a mobile phone)
    I love the power saving mode….
    one improvement would be that with certain callers, you get a 3D Star Wars-esque hologram when someone calls you….now that would be cool….I’d give the right lung of whomever was standing next to me at the time for something like that
    although, if you think about it, I would prefer to give the lung of the guy that made the power issue of the N8 cause it to be such a failure

    I bought the N8 when it first came out thinking at last something to keep up with those apple boys!

    I am so frustrated with the bugs on this phone and then after it totally locking up I did a hard reset and since then I have stopped using the phone as OVI store wont work, I had to put a beta OVI maps on… Calender sync problems with exchange for mail, the browsers just closes when it feels like it..

    and there’s more….

    I’ve already recommended my friends not to get this phone… I went back to my N86 before xmas due to the above faults and I now wonder why I even bought the N8, what a waste of time and money..

    ps. the speaker is in a bad position too… when the phone is left lying done (face up as normal) the speaker is muffled as its on the bottom side of the phone.

    In general Hardware (apart from speaker location) is good, software (OS) is rubbish and must of been rushed out without proper testing….

    After seeing the C7 and C6 having simular designs and software (OS) problems I’m thinking the N8 is probably the last nokia I will ever buy…. and I’ve been a nokia fan since the mid 90′s…. anyone else remember when they bought out the nokia 8210 what a phone it was great in its day…. what happened nokia???

  • Andy Smith

    I love my N8 but if your doing an update it would greatly enhance my experience if a torch app was included. You have no idea how much grief i’ve taken from all those ANDROID users because my all singing all dancing phone is no good when i drop my keys outside in the dark…….

    Thank you

  • usman

    im really disappointed with my N8. i have been using Nokias for almost 11 years and with my frustration i changed brand and then i went back to Nokia N8 this year and im so frustrated having it as im planning to go for the Galaxy X but then to no avail my hands went to the poor N8 although i loved the camera but thats all there is to it. please Nokia can you just change the OS i want a simpler OS like the iPhone but not the iPhone itself just the OS. I hope you are listening. Thanks a lot.

    10. Facebook with more functions like Android and iphone.

    i bought my n8 on contract about 2 and a half weeks ago… I dont no a grate deal about technoligy on phones i have always had a basic phone. But certain things fustrates me and really hope some one can tell me if its the phone or me …. 1. When i search for certain apps that friends with an older Nokia phones have told me are good i search and its not there? Like ovi maps racing? Are these apps not available for the latest Nokia just the older ones? Or am i just having problems ?
    2.. Ovi unlimited music downloads people have told me we should have this on a Nokia purchesed in the UK but my phone says it is not supported on this handset? I thought the latest phones were ment to have all the best functions not just some? I was told the n8 comes in two variaties one with a 16gb memory and one 32gb and its only available on the 32gb? When buyin my phone the sales team supposidly showed me the two best phones on the market now a blackberry and my n8 i was never told about a better version of it if there even is one? I really want ovi unlimited music when can this be a available to all of your loyal Nokia n8 users.
    3.phone freezes and switches off and has a white screen very annoying. My phone is insured can i get a new one? Could the new one be the music edition one?
    4.Also the web tv options never load for me get a message server unavailable but i can still connect to the internet perfectly?
    Other than these problems i am having fun and enjoying using the features i can use and the camera i hope some one can tell me im doing something wrong and help me out and not be that the phone cant do certain things as these are some of the reasons i chose this phone please some one reply to this message thanx so so much :) Charlie x x

    I was one of the lucky N8 winners at Qt-Dev-Days in Munich (fact or **bleep** competition) :-) and after using the phone for two weeks I have some bug reports and general feedback. Hopefully this is the proper place to report my problems… Before the n8 I was a n900 user and also had a 5800 XM.

    Bugs:

    1. The e-mail application and the widget (imap, configured for gmail and email for exchange with a MS server) doesn’t sync properly. It knows of new e-mails, but it never deletes old messages unless I click on “synchronize”. This behavior doesn’t make sense and it’s very annoying to keep seeing old e-mails on my inbox if I deleted or archived them (e.g.: via webmail).

    2. The calendar (synced via mail-for-exchange) has a problem similar to the e-mail via imap: it know of new entries, but it can’t update entries. For example, I have meetings assigned for 6 months on my m-f-e calendar. If one of these meetings is updated (say, the time is changed), the calendar is not updated.

    3. On the web browser, there’s no way to open links on new windows or create a new browser window. The browser knows how to switch windows if they’re open by the website, but there’s no way an user can open multiple windows.

    4. I don’t know how to sync a “mail for exchange” calendar manually, couldn’t find it anywhere.

    5. While searching for a way to sync my mail-for-exchange calendar, I tried a few “sync” options. I had nothing set up (no ovi account and the phone was not connected to a PC). I canceled every operation it was supposed to start and as a result of an software error somewhere, my full contact list was removed (zeroed). In other words, trying to find a way to sync my calendar, “I” ended up removing all my contacts.

    6. After clicking on “Applications” on the menu/grid, it sometimes takes too long to open the next level (the applications menu/grid). I end up clicking a second time and thus opening the video-editor (the next icon gets the “click”).

    7. The phone keeps switching between wi-fi and 3G a lot, for no good reason. It also froze a few times when switching networks due to a bug somewhere in the network stack. It’s a hard-to-reproduce problem, but anyway…

    8. The battery status is not calculated correctly. It stays in 100% for too long and starts dropping only after it’s close to 80-70%. I believe it’s a tradition of Nokia/Symbian phones to keep the level at 100% for longer than expected (so that the user believes the phone is good at battery consumption), but it makes far less sense with smartphones;

    9. I don’t have a straightforward way to reproduce it, but some received calls are not associated with the respective contact, even though the number is correctly assigned to it (instead, the number is displayed). I even merged the just received call to the contact but new calls were still displayed as the number instead of the proper contact name. It used to work, I don’t know why it doesn’t anymore.

    Main feedback points:

    1. There should be no delay when switching “desktops” (workspaces);

    2. Some widgets on the homescreen are too small (e-mail, social). There should be an option for double-sized widgets;

    3. When answering or making a call, there are too many notifications (“requested modified”, “active diverts”, etc). I can’t make/answer a call and imediatelly put it on speaker due to these;

    4.. There’s an inconsistency on the way “popup menus” are handled: in some cases clicking outside of the menu closes it, in some other places I have to click on “cancel” (personally, I prefer to just click outside of the menu to close it);

    5. If the phone is blocked, I can’t answer a call and put it on the speaker. That’s very annoying (and the fact that using mail-for-exchange forces me to enable phone blocking doesn’t help);

    6. The speaker is badly positioned: leaving the phone facing up (speaker is on the back) over a soft surface (e.g: a bed) will make it difficult to hear it.

    7. The browser is very very very weak. It’s far below the expectations of a smartphone browser these days (usability wise);

    8. Skype (I know, I know, it’s a third-party application) is very buggy (lots of problems: internet connection, rendering problems, sensors not working, etc).
    I agree with your points I have the same problems! AND MORE

    3. I also add that it is bugged and often just kicks me out, some pages are impossible to open as it keeps on kicking me out!!! Does not support column view, makes it tedious to read! The solution for now is use Opera mobile.

    8- Yes, also the bars are very confusing and do not correspond to the percentages. It could show 6 ou of 7 bars (almos full), but when you look up the percentage is shows 40%!!

    9- This problem could come from the fact that the number is introduced twice in our contacts, search and make sure it is not duplicated.

    I add:
    Feed backs

    2- most of all there should be some way to easily indicate that we have new mail!! Like it does for missed calls and messages.

    3- I hate the Nokia prompts, I do not understand they keep them on new models!!! Ridiculous! Still we now have less and are faster to disappear than what it was on the N95

    5- I have the same problem!!! How come it was overlooked. All calling functions should be available when a call is received!

    6- Skype and other applications are bugged and do not work properly, the worst for Skype is that you cannot have it connect to Wifi unless you put wifi as principal connection, a tediuos procedure. But Panorama is developed by Nokia and you can find it in OVI store, complete **bleep**!!!

    I also add that one cannot select several SMS and delete them, you have to delete all or do it one by one!! Ridiculous
    Managing Wifi in general is tedious
    Even though you designate Opera as the default browser, it is not always so!

    Here is more on the email server:

    Sorry to inform that the Nokia N8 email server is inefficient and full of bugs:
    1- When you want to open an email, you often get the retrieve sign and this could take up to several minutes! You get it again every time you want to answer or forward an email!
    2- Some times emails get stuck in the “outbox”. When this happens you are in deep trouble as the only thing you can do is erase it and start all over as it does not allow you to open it (unable to open while sending message), unable to move it to another folder and send it again, unable to force send it!
    3- I set push email off from 10:30 pm to 6:00 am, so normally after 6:00 am, I should automatically get my emails, however it does not until I play with the phone and sometimes even recycle it.
    3- It does not offer the resend option and in one has to tap the screen several times in order to get the keyboard for editing purpose
    4- Does not have a column/wrap view for reading.
    5- On the POP enterprise emails, there the problem is huge! Mega bugs: in addition to the problems/inefficiencies mentioned above, it does not keep a copy of the sent email in the “sent” box! This one is always empty. Does not send a deleted message to the “deleted items” box, emails are just lost in nature! And a couple times, once I downloaded my emails into Outlook on my PC, my Nokia just emptied my Inbox after it synchronized.

    WE NEED AN URGENT FIX, ESPETIALLY FOR THE POP EMAIL BUGS. Once all of the above is fixed, then the Nokia N8 email server will be the best in the market (except for setting up POP email compared to BB, but this is just a one time inconvenience…)

    I have been using the N8 for 10 weeks. No major probelms encountered. Only 1 app hang only so far. It is as good as Iphone. I love the design with HDMI and MicroSD card slot. No doubt Nokia is playing catchup but slowly and steady they improving.

    Not trying to be funny here and i know that some of your requests are almost valid. What i am finding very hard to understand is that not more of you people understand how important a torch is. Have you ever stood outside the pub pissed as a fart in the cold rain dropped your car keys then had to walk home bumping into every tree on the way? This may sound a little trivial but when you put it up against need an alert for incoming E-mail Do be brief it’s a no brainer………..Torch first, then sort out the bugs please.
