James Cameron's Avatar was one of the biggest film's of last year, and James Cameron's Avatar HD game for the Nokia N8 looks like following suit. To find out if this stunning game is any good, join us after the break...
James Cameron's Avatar HD is a large game, and you'll need a WLAN connection to download the 127.32MB file. It takes about ten minutes to download and install, during which you're advised not to turn off your Nokia N8.
You play the part of Cpt. Ryan Lorenz, and 'submit your human consiousness into the body of an experimental human-Na’vi hybrid" (basically you control a humanoid type creature) - just like the avatars found in the film. You can run, shoot, jump, climb and lots of other things, using a mixture of onscreen buttons and an onscreen joypad (just like the one in Real Football 2010 HD).
The controls work really well, with multi-touch support letting you press several buttons at once, and the onscreen joypad proving very responsive and accurate.
Your job – at least once you get out of the training compound, is to find particular objects, working your way through the various 3D worlds. The camera pans around the avatar, but usually spends most of the time following it. As such, it's easy to see everything that's going on.
The graphics in Avatar HD are simply amazing – this is without a doubt one of the nicest looking games we've seen to date on a mobile phone. It really does take advantage of the Nokia N8's dedicated GPU, yet everything runs quickly and smoothly. The scenery is incredibly lifelike, with a real sense of depth.
The gameplay is equally compelling, with the graphics, controls and general speed of the game all combining to make a title that's impossible to put down. It's not cheap - at £3 - but this is one game that's definitely worth paying for.
