Ovi Store App: Flashlight Extreme Review...

There are loads of apps on the Ovi Store that promise flashlight functionality, but you have to pay for lots of them. Flashlight Extreme is completely free – join us after the break to see if it's worth downloading...

App developers use a couple of different methods to offer torch functionality on mobile phones. Some use the screen of your Nokia – lighting the entire panel up white.

Flashlight Extreme uses the flash that usually accompanies your Nokia's camera. Click on the app, and it starts up in seconds. When it's running, there's a torch displayed on the screen.

Click the button on the torch to turn on your Nokia's flash – it comes on near instantly, and there's no lag when turning it on or off.

We used Flashlight Extreme with our Nokia N97 Mini, and couldn't have been happier with the results. It proved particularly bright – even over several feet, and is ideal for finding keyholes or other objects in the dark.

There's also an SOS function – click on the SOS function and the light will start flashing on and off, changing the intervals (presumably in morse code or some such!).

Overall, Flashlight Extreme is a great little app. It's simple, it works flawlessly, and it's particularly handy.

How about ecomony mode that uses just one of the dual LEDs. Alternately of course, so that one doesn’t wear out before the other.

if you guys ever discover an flashlight app for nokia N8 that uses the xenon lights as a flashlight and NOT the screen please write about it!

I’ve been looking for one in the ovi store ever since I bought the phone. It can’t be so hard to make an app that uses the xenon lights, or can it?

I was hoping for a flashlight app that doesn’t use the screen of my N8 too, but I don’t think that’s possible…
The xenon flash filament is extremely thin and will burn if ignited for too long.
