Nokia N8 App: Nokia Reader Review

Finding the time to catch up on news can be a tricky task, which is where Nokia Reader comes in. Nokia Reader lets you get all the latest news feeds, straight to the home screen of your Nokia N8. Join us after the break to find out if it's any good...

Nokia Beta Labs is the division behind Nokia's latest experimental software, including Nokia Reader. Unlike rival RSS clients, which need you to open them to check the latest news, Nokia Reader brings your RSS feeds straight to your Nokia N8's home screen.

You'll find a host of RSS feeds already set up – letting you simply choose from the most popular, including BBC Sport, The Telegraph and The Sun as standard.

You can also set up your own RSS feeds. Simply enter the URL of the website, and Nokia Reader will set up the RSS feed where possible.

The top of the app is split into three sections – Reader, which shows all the feeds and headlines, My Feeds, which lets you remove and add feeds, and Directory, which lets you select new feeds by category and from a big list.

It's easy to read from the headlines – if the white on black text doesn't work for you, it's possible to swap colours, and clicking a headline lets you read the first paragraph. Click Read More, and you'll be taken to the website.

Once you've picked the feeds you want, it's possible to place a widget on the home screen of your Nokia N8, where the latest news will pop up without having to press a button.

The widget for the homescreen is more limited in terms of what it offers – there's only space for one headline at a time, but it quickly scrolls through the latest news. See something you're interested in, tap the widget and you'll be taken to the app itself near instantly.

In order to keep power consumption to a minimum, Nokia Reader uses push technology – as with many email services – delivering the latest news only when relevant to you.

Nokia Reader is a great little app, and worth a look if you want to check out the latest news and features. It's still at a beta stage, however, so there may be the occasional performance issue along the way.

Our biggest criticism is that it doesn't seem possible to get the latest feeds without automatically using a wireless connection – and as soon as we disconnected the Wi-Fi, the widget would go back to offline mode.
