The Nokia C5-03 comes with a 5-Megapixel camera, which may be the norm in more mid- to high-end smartphones but in an entry-level device like this it’s still fairly rare to see. So, how well does it stack up, find out with our Nokia C5-03 camera review.
We’re kind of spoilt these day with the proliferation of great camera technology on Nokia smartphones. From the all-consuming powerhouse that is the Nokia N8, to the more than modest Nokia C3-02 Touch and Type, these is something for everyone, no matter what your level of interest or expertise is.
So, it is with the Nokia C5-03. The 3.2-inch screen with a 360 x 640-pixel resolution works reasonably well as a viewfinder but you may well find that it gets washed out when trying to us it on a bright funny day. This is pretty much par for the course on all phones at this price point, however.
There isn’t a hardware capture key on the side of the Nokia C5-03 but you’ll find that the audio volume controls double up as Zoom controls. In order to take a snap, you have to touch the small camera icon on the viewfinder screen. This works well, but it does take a little practise to keep a steady hand.
The layout of the camera app is standard across all the Symbian S60 5th Edition smartphones, so you’ll find Camera Mode (camera or video), Scene Modes and Settings set down the right-hand side of the screen, while image information and the number of shots left can be found in the bottom left-hand corner. When it comes to features, you’ll find that Auto Exposure, Full Screen Viewfinder, Self Timer, Sequence Mode, and even a Still Image Editor all come as standard.
In tech terms, the Nokia C5-03 is a 5-megapixel camera, so you can snap images up to 2592 x 1944 pixels in size. There is a 4x digital zoom, which works surprisingly well for those times when you’re a little too far away and want to get right in amongst the action.
Perhaps the most curious feature on the Nokia C5-03 is that it comes without Flash, so you won’t be able to take many pictures in low light conditions. However, there is a Low Light mode you can choose from the Settings that will allow you to get decent snaps in darker rooms.
The camera focal range is 30cm to infinity (and beyond), so you won’t really want to use the Nokia C5-03 for close-up work. In fact, you won’t find a macro setting, so this phone is best used for snaps of friends and family and landscapes, which we found it handled with a fair degree of ease.
Taking photos is very much a case of point and click and images are saved as a JPEG format, so editing is straightforward. We found the whole experience fairly easy and while the more photography fan won’t be appeased by what the Nokia C5-03 has to offer, if you just need to take the odd snap, quickly and without fuss, this is as good a camera as we’ve seen.
Overall, the 5-megapixel camera on the Nokia C5-03 is a nice addition but is nothing exceptional. We’re not about to tell you it’s the best camera phone around, as it simply hasn’t been designed with high-end photography in mind. No, what the Nokia C5-03 delivers is a decent every day point and click experience that average users will like.
