Nokia C6-01 Review: Software and Interface

The Nokia C6-01 is the latest Symbian ^3 smartphone, following on from the Nokia N8 and Nokia C7. The operating system was introduced late last year, and offers a fully customisable interface. To find out what the Nokia C6-01 is like to use, join us after the cut...

One of the biggest changes between the Symbian ^3 OS on the Nokia C6-01 and older versions of Symbian is the home screen arrangement. Symbian ^3 is the first version of the OS to get multiple home screens, letting you add a lot more shortcuts or widgets for one-touch operation. You can also have different wallpapers for each home screen.

The widgets for the home screens are more advanced – you can now add up to 20 contacts to the phonebook widget, for instance, and simply flick a finger to the right or left to scroll through them.

We also love the notifications widget on the Nokia C6-01, letting you know when you get a new message, and previewing it so you don't even have to open it if you're in a rush. Other notifications include missed calls and voice mail messages, with up to three notifications showing simultaneously.

The Nokia N8 was the first Symbian smartphone to get threaded text messaging, and the Nokia C6-01 follows in its footsteps. It's easy to view entire conversations, or you can also open your regular inbox and view text messages individually. The multi-touch screen and zoom feature on the Nokia C6-01, Nokia N8 and Nokia C7 is another first for Symbian ^3, letting you pinch your fingers to zoom when viewing photographs or using the integrated web browser.

The Nokia C6-01 feels faster and runs more smoothly than older Symbian S60 5th Edition handsets. Multi-tasking is improved, with a change to the interface that makes it a lot less fiddly to manage your applications. You'll now get a big thumbnail of all open apps – just flick through them and pick the one you want to use, or click the cross in the corner to close the app.

As with older versions of Symbian, apps are still placed in folders as default – from Office to Tools, but it's as easy as ever to customise the Symbian OS. You can move apps onto the main menu, or into different folders, or simply add them as shortcuts to one of the home screens.

Features like USB on the go make it easier than ever to manage all your files, either by backing them up or copying over new details. We also love the photo editing software that comes as standard, helping you to get unbeatable photographs.

Overall, the Symbian ^3 operating system may look familiar, but it helps to make the Nokia C6-01 a powerful and easy to customise smartphone.
