Despite all the recent talk of Nokia Windows Phone devices, Nokia is still going full steam ahead with flagship OS MeeGo. MeeGo also has a new boss, Sebastian Nyström – the man behind Nokia's Qt framework – and he has lots to say about the new operating system. Join us after the break to find out more...

MeeGo is the operating system that's set to appear in high-end Nokia devices. The open-source OS is the result of a partnership between Nokia and Intel, and follows on from Nokia's own innovative Maemo OS. The former chief of MeeGo – Alberto Torres – recently stepped down, so Sebastian Nyström taking over the mantle is good news.

Sebastian Nyström was a key player in Nokia's Qt framework, which lets developers easily port apps and software between Symbian ^3 and MeeGo, which bodes well for the Finnish company's new flagship operating system.

The first MeeGo-based Nokia smartphone is set to appear during this year, with rumours circulating that it'll be called the Nokia N950. On the new MeeGo OS, Sebastian Nyström commented: “We believe our upcoming device will have unique appeal to the style-conscious, connected enthusiast.”

According to Slashgear, Sebastian Nyström's role will include “keeping Nokia on track to deliver necessary software updates following launch of the product” and “working with the Linux Foundation, Intel and the wider community to plan Nokia’s future involvement in meego.com”.

I find it difficult to get excited about a product the company’s own CEO has relegated to niche status. A test platform to help discover the next disruption? Wow…what a compelling statement. It’s clear Elop is on a mission for his boss, Ballmer. Meego is nothing more than a distraction and will therefore get relatively little support from Nokia, IMO.

I totally agree. I was so looking forward to the N9 and when I heard this news about merging with Microsoft, I decided to stop waiting and got an Android phone instead. Nokia f***ed up bad on this. They could\’ve taken over with Maemo and/or Meego, but where was the support directly from Nokia? Nowhere!

Launch with the basics and a few \"nice to have\’s\" and they would\’ve made a killing on Maemo, but they couldn\’t decide wtf they were going to go with. People were confused…are they supporting Symbian? Maemo? Meego? Like….wtf – pick one and go with it for F****s sake!

Bunch of losers – world\’s #1 phone company and they have no idea what people want anymore. My favorite Nokia phone was the E90 and now they lost a fan. I\’m sure they don\’t give a sh*t that\’s why I\’m going over to Android.

Nokia N900 was and still is a fantastic phone.
N950 can be the worlds best phone, but not necasserily to everyones liking,
I am not interested to replace my N900 with any existing phones, but maby an N950.
Do not care about Nokias policy as long as they make a phone a like.
