It's that time of year when we start dusting off our bikes and pulling out the running shoes in a bid to make up for a winter spent doing far too little. With Sports Tracker running on your Nokia C5-03, however, you can play this year's fitness drive your way. Read on for our Sports Tracker app review.
The Nokia C5-03 is an ideal exercise companion. It's small, light but gives you quick access to major features through the excellent 3.2in touchscreen. In fact, it's the perfect platform for an app like Sports Tracker, which is designed to help you monitor your workout while out and about, then analyse it in detail afterwards.
Considering Sports Tracker is free, we really were taken aback by just how detailed and versatile it is. That said, you wouldn't think so from the basic homescreen that greets you when you fire the app up for the first time.
You have three options – to start a new workout, check out your training diary, or delve into the settings. The bottom half of the screen is taken up by info on your last workout, and basic time and sunrise/sunset details.
Tap New workout, however, and you start to get a sense of the versatility on offer. You can set the exact activity you're about to take on – impressively, there are 12 activities pre-loaded, and you can even add a further six yourself.
You can also target your performance on a previous occasion – ideal if you use the same training course regularly. Handily, you can set Sports Tracker to split your performance into virtual 'laps' on every 1km or 500m mark, so you can analyse your performance in fine detail afterwards. Of course, you can also add lap markers manually as you go.

Hit OK once you're happy with these settings and finally you get to the meat of Sports Tracker. Gone are all the text or drop-down settings, and you're now greeted with a far more graphical interface, laid out in modular fashion to show a map, your time, distance, pace and heart rate – if you've hooked up the add-on Sports Tracker heart rate transmitter (which, unlike the app, isn't free).
Hit the start button when you're ready, and Sports Tracker starts soaking up info to help you focus on delivering a maximum performance during your workout, while also providing insight afterwards.
The main screen provides a useful overview of the key indicators, but hit the Options menu, then View, and you can toggle down to four other views, including just a map, just figures or a pair of on-screen graphs showing your performance as you go.
One feature we particularly appreciated was the night-time view, which switches the interface to an all-black and red combination to suit low light conditions.
Once your workout is done you're immediately given the option to upload your workout details either to Sports-tracker.com or Facebook, but otherwise you can skip this step and simply store the info on your Nokia C5-03.
Overall we were highly impressed with Sports Tracker, given that it's totally free. Forget the claim of covering 12 sports – for the average user you're talking walking, running or cycling, but in each case this handy app gives you a level of performance analysis you otherwise wouldn't be able to get. Highly recommended.
