Nokia E6, Nokia E7 hits serious dilemma

The Nokia E6 landed yesterday and NokNok was lucky enough to be there and gets its hands on the new QWERTY wonderkid. In all honesty, we weren’t prepared by how bowled over we would be with this device. You see, we think the Nokia E7 rocks but the Nokia E6 has got us thinking, seriously thinking. Read on to find out about our Nokia E6, Nokia E7 serious dilemma.

I own and use a Nokia N8. It’s been my smartphone of choice since it launched. Yesterday, I was given a hands-on glimpse of what Symbian Anna will deliver and it makes me even more convinced that the Nokia N8 is one of the most powerful and versatile smartphones out there today.

Check out our Nokia E6 hands-in first impressions

The thing is, for the last couple of weeks I’ve been using the Nokia E7, the 4-inch screen is simply amazing and the QWERTY keyboard just makes getting work and social networking done a lot easier. Sure, it lacks the 12-Megapixel camera of the Nokia N8 but I’ve been putting a lot of thought into whether I should switch to the Nokia E7 full time, it’s that good.

Then along came the Nokia E6. It takes everything we thought we knew about this class of device and pretty much rewrites the rules. That’s how impressed we are with it.

I spent some time at the Nokia Symbian Event talking to Chris Probert, UK Product Manager for the new Nokia E6, who ran the device through its paces, from showing off the Full VGA resolution screen and how amazing video and images look to the tiny details such as the heritage of the device and how it’s been refined and reworked to use space economically and to the users benefit.

We even spent some time checking out the camera quality and nothing disappointed. It uses the same EDoF 8-Megapixel camera technology as in the Nokia E7 and while there has been plenty of online grumbling about fixed-focus technology, we’ve found the quality to be more than acceptable for everyday use. If you’re simply taking snaps of the family on holiday, or friends for Facebook then it’s more than up to the job. By the way, if you want a few more insights from Chris then check out Nokia Conversations, as they’ve got a great interview with him.

The dilemma is that I was pretty sure the Nokia E7 was the smartphone for me but the Nokia E6 is starting to wheedle its way into my thoughts. Sad as it sounds, I dreamt about it last night, which is why I wrote this opinion piece to get it off my chest. Yes, I know the Nokia E7 is a communicator class of device while the Nokia E6 is a messenger and I was sure the bigger was better route was the one for me, but I've started to think otherwise. It's the combination of touchcsreen and QWERTY keyboard that's really got me wondering which one is right for me.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this dilemma. So, roll-on the release of the Nokia E6 so we can spend some time together, it may be the start of something amazing!

I tried the E7 for a full day and I tried to love it. I tried the camera repeatedly and it is really bad. In flash mode, it is as if you were splashing your subject with milk. Nokia, if you read this, come to your senses. Who is asking you to produce ever thinner machines? For the extra thickness required by autofocus, you could also have fitted a bigger battery and an SD expansion slot. And who told you that Symbian stinks? It doesn’t. It does what any 20% reasonable (yes that is 80% crazy) person would like to do with their phones. iPhones cover the remaining 20%. So what? Stop skimping on the last few cents of worth of hardware. You fit a beautiful screen, a great keyboard and … you aim a cannon at your feet and you fit a nasty piece of junk which some fraud called a camera. That is RIDICULOUS. That is CRIMINAL!

very true. nokia had always the best cameras from all mobile makers in their phones, and people loved nokia for this. and now, when technology is so high, they are going to make so bad cameras as in htc or far-east phones. if they offer faster processors, more ram, lower price, and different configuration of devices as samsung s8500 and s8530 or flood of galaxy versions-where is a reason to buy a nokia? only ovi maps? all of new nokia touchscreens are almost the same. differ mainly with design, screen size and exclusively with camera for n8. fixed focus was good for low end phones for 150$ as 5230… not for 8mp cameras…. lets make something like e7 or x7 with n8 camera, or at least with autofocus….

I don´t need cameras in phones, I rarely use it. I really think it´s ok for a business user to put that kind of camera in. I am happy with it.
