It's always an exciting moment when you open the packaging and first lay eyes on a shiny new phone, and when that phone is attractive as the Nokia C5-03, that excitement is understandable.

With its great 3.2-inch touchscreen and slim design, the Nokia C5-03 is a winner on the hardware front. Under the surface, meanwhile, you've got the tried and tested Symbian S60 5th Edition running the show, giving you access to loads of great apps from the Ovi Store.

But before you get to that, it's time to go through the basics. Read on as we walk you through some of the most likely tasks you'll want to get started with on your Nokia C5-03.

Nokia C5-03: How To Add Contacts To Your HomeScreen

One of the advantages of that nice big touchscreen on the Nokia C5-03 is that you can pin your favourite contacts directly to it and access them with a single tap.

To add contacts to the home screen, your first step is to make sure you have the right home screen layout activated. To check this on the Nokia C5-03, tap Menu, then Settings, Personal and Home screen. Go into Home screen themes and make sure Contacts bar is selected.

On returning to the home screen you should now see a blank thumbnail icon titled Add. Adding your first contact, or any further contacts thereafter, is simply a matter of tapping this icon and choosing whose details you wish to pin to the home screen from your contacts list – note that you can also add a link to your own Ovi profile from here.

If you haven’t attached an image to the contact’s profile, you’ll be prompted to do so – either from your phone’s memory or by taking a pic on the spot. Not to worry if you want to skip this step, though: you can still proceed regardless if you so choose.

And that’s about that – your chosen contact will now have their own dedicated icon on your Nokia C5-03′s home screen, complete with a thumbnail image if you chose one. You can add as many as 20 contacts in total, and cycling between them is as simple as a side swipe across the icons.

Tap a specific contact’s icon and you’ll see a call log and all your recent messages in one handy list. To edit a contact’s info, simply tap Options on the bottom left, and then Settings from the menu that appears. Here you can amend their details, add a new pic, link to an Ovi friend, or remove their privileged status as a home screen contact altogether.

Nokia C5-03: How To Change The Time and Set An Alarm

The Nokia C5-03 and its Symbian S60 operating system make for a surprisingly versatile combination, and that versatility extends to many of the main settings. The clock, for instance, comes with a wide range of setup options, and the multi-talented alarm feature is a perfect match for any need.

There are actually two ways to get to Nokia C5-03′s Time and date setup screen to adjust the clock. You can either go through the dedicated Clock utility, which is found in the Applications menu, or go into the Settings menu, tap Phone and then Date and time.

But the easiest method of all is simply to tap the time on the top left of the HomeScreen, which will take you straight into the Clock app.

The main on-screen options here relate to the alarm, which we’ll get to in a moment. To change the clock settings, simply tap Options on the bottom left, then Settings from the menu that appears.

Naturally you can change the time and date here, but you can also select how both are displayed on the Nokia C5-03, such as whether you prefer a 12-hour or 24-hour clock, or in which order you wish day, month and year to be shown. This is also where you select your time zone, which is good to know if you’re a regular traveller.

Setting an alarm involves knowing about two menus – the New alarm and the Alarms options visible on the Clock utility’s main screen. The former, as the name implies, is where you go to set up a new alarm, while the latter lets you edit existing alarms and change wider settings.

Tap New alarm and a simple page opens up where you can set the alarm time, a brief description so you can tell it apart from any other alarms you’ve set, and an option to set a pattern for the alarm to repeat, such as if it’s an early morning alarm that you only want active on workdays.

The Alarms option, meanwhile, will list all alarms currently set up on your Nokia C5-03 – tap directly on individual entries to reset or remove them. We’ll now return to the Options / Settings menu we covered earlier to take a closer look at the alarm-relevant settings.

When the Date and time settings page opens, scroll down past the time-related settings and you’ll see three alarm-based settings that are highly useful to personalise. First of all, there’s Clock alarm tone – the all-important tune that your Nokia C5-03 will gently coax you out of your slumber with.

Below that you’ll find Alarm snooze time, which lets you determine just how long a stay of execution you’ll get by hitting the Snooze button when your alarm goes off – options range from a single minute to a full hour.

Lastly there’s the option to select what days are covered by the concept Workdays – if you work Monday to Saturday, for instance, this lets you add the latter to your Nokia C5-03′s understanding of the working week. Or of course, if you’re lucky enough to only work three or four days a week, you can adjust things accordingly.

Nokia C5-03: How To Set Up Email

One of the first things you’ll want to do when you turn on your Nokia C5-03 for the first time is to set up your email account. The Nokia C5-03′s Symbian S60 version 5 operating system makes setting up your email a simple process, and you’re sure to be scanning through your mail in no time.

If you’re setting up email for the first time you’ll first need to run through a few background settings. Press the Menu button, then navigate to Applications, then Tools then Sett Wizard. You’ll be asked to provide your email and service provider settings.

Once this is done, tap E-mail setup from the same menu, or return to the Homescreen at your leisure and tap the Set up email option below your Contacts widgets about halfway down the screen.

You’ll need to confirm that you’re OK with the Nokia C5-03′s mail app using your web connection to send and receive data – you won’t be able to continue if you don’t but do be aware that this might add extra data costs.

Your Nokia C5-03 will then run a few tests behind the scenes then you’re ready to go. Tap Start on the Welcome to E-mail setup window, and select which email provider your account is with.

The most popular choices are listed individually, topped by Ovi Mail naturally, and there’s also an Other option to set up a mail account with a service not listed.

Note that if you haven’t already set up an Ovi Mail account, you won’t be able to do that here – as you only have the chance to set up existing email addresses.

Regardless of the option you select, you’ll then be presented with a window to type in your email username, then a second for entering your password.

All that’s remaining is to accept the terms and conditions, and you’re done – emails will now fire straight to your Homescreen.

Nokia C5-03: How To Update Your Firmware

It’s important to keep your Nokia C5-03 up to date with the latest firmware from Nokia. It’s not only a matter of stability and security, but doing so also makes sure you receive the latest tweaks and new features that arrive via update for the Symbian S60 v5 operating system.

To check which version of Symbian S60 v5 you’re running, press the Menu button then tap on Settings, Phone and then scroll down to select Phone mgmt.

Select Device updates and at the top of the Device updates page that appears, you’ll see which OS version is currently installed on your Nokia C5-03. At the time of writing the latest version is V10.0.024, which replaced V10.0.031.

You can update your software in one of two ways – either directly over the air or via a software utility on your computer.

To update your Nokia C5-03 directly, tap on Options from the Device updates page you’re already in, then choose Check for updates. Your Nokia C5-03 will then connect to Nokia’s servers and see if there’s a newer version of your OS available. If so it will ask if you wish to download. Tap Accept, and the file download will begin.

Once the update has been downloaded, you’ll be requested to back up your data, as the update process will otherwise clear your phone’s internal memory of any files you’ve saved there. Tap Accept, then you’ll see a warning that your phone will be unavailable for a few minutes while the update installs. Agree to this and your Nokia C5-03 will start installing the update.

That’ll take a few minutes, but the phone runs through the process itself without requiring your input. Eventually your Nokia C5-03 will restart and show you a message that the update is complete, and that’s it – you’re done!

If you’re using a PC, you’ll need the Nokia Software Updater (NSU), which can be downloaded directly from Nokia.

Connect up your Nokia C5-03 via the supplied USB cable or via Bluetooth, then fire up your NSU and follow the on-screen prompts once you’ve clicked Start. The software will locate your Nokia C5-03 and identify any updates available. To download, place a tick to agree that you’ve read the terms, then click on Install.

Nokia C5-03: How To Back Up Your Data Using Ovi PC Suite

Whether you’re talking files, music, pictures or just contact and calendar info, chances are you’ve got a fair bit of personal data squirrelled away on your Nokia C5-03. All the more reason, then, to keep it backed up using Nokia’s Ovi PC Suite.

Your Nokia C5-03 stores files in one of two places – either on the phone’s limited allocation of internal memory, or on the microSD card that came with it in the box.

It’s the former that you have to take particular care of – that’s where your precious contacts are stored along with your calendar and the like. That sort of info can be irreplaceable, so backing up your phone regularly makes a lot of sense.

Ovi PC Suite isn’t fussy, however: it’ll back up your messages, contacts, calendar, photos and videos, and you can even set it up to do the job automatically every time you connect your Nokia C5-03.

To do this, fire up Ovi PC Suite on your computer, then click on the Tools menu and select Options. From the window that appears, click on Device sync. From here you’ll be presented with a series of tick-boxes so you can specify exactly which content you wish to be sync-ed automatically. Make your choices, then tick the box marked Sync automatically every time you connect the device, then click OK.

With that done, you can relax in the knowledge that Ovi PC Suite will back up your data every time you hook up your Nokia C5-03 to the computer. Alternatively, you can back up manually yourself at any time by clicking the Sync all button at the bottom of the main Ovi PC Suite screen.

Nokia C5-03: How To Import Your Contacts From Your SIM

There are several ways of importing contacts onto your Nokia C5-03, and it largely depends on the phone you were using before and where the contacts were stored.

If your contacts are already stored on your SIM card, things couldn’t be easier. When you first start up your Nokia C5-03 you’ll be asked whether you want to copy names and numbers from the SIM card to your phone. Select Yes, and the details will start copying over.

If you’re porting your contacts over from another Nokia phone, however, there is potentially an even easier way of going about things. The Nokia C5-03 features a handy little utility called Phone switch, which lets you automatically import contacts, calendar entries and other data from another Nokia device that also has the utility on board.

To access Phone switch on your Nokia C5-03, hit the Menu button, then tap Settings and then Phone switch. Once you’ve read the on-screen info, tap Continue and the process will kick off. The transfer happens via Bluetooth, so both devices will need to have Bluetooth switched on.

Your Nokia C5-03 will then search for Bluetooth-enabled devices in the vicinity – when it finds your old phone, select it to pair up, then repeat the process on your old device. You have three options at the bottom of the screen once the devices are connected. You can either synchronise data across both, start sending data or start receiving data.

Select the appropriate command on each phone, and pop off to make a cup of tea. The process should be done in just a couple of minutes, and all your contacts, calendar entries and the like will be stored safely aboard your new Nokia C5-03.

Nokia C5-03: How To Change The Wallpaper

We've had a look at how to keep your Nokia C5-03 looking and feeling fresh by changing the Theme. However, there's an even easier way of giving your phone a new look, and one that's potentially a lot more personal too: you can simply change your Homescreen wallpaper.

The Nokia C5-03's standard wallpaper is attractive enough, but you'll invariably want to change it at some point – either just to have something new to look at, or to replace it with a favourite pic or one of your nearest and dearest.

Fortunately, switching your wallpaper image on the Nokia C5-03 is quick and easy, so there's nothing stopping you from changing it as often as you like.

If you're looking to take a pic on the spot and use it as your wallpaper, you'll first need to get that part out of the way. Fire up the camera, either through the Homescreen widget if you have one or through Menu / Applications / Camera. Take the photo you wish to use, then return to the Homescreen.

To actually change the wallpaper, press the Menu button, then tap Gallery. This is a one-stop shop to access all the media stored on board the Nokia C5-03 itself or any memory card you have slotted in, whether it's photos, videos, songs or other media.

Select the top option – Images & photos – and you'll be presented with thumbnail images of all the photos and videos on your phone in a grid formation. You can only set photos as wallpapers, not video clips – but you can easily identify and avoid the latter by the small film icon on the bottom right of the thumbnail.

Once you've located the picture you wish to use as your background, tap on it to select it and it will appear in full-screen mode. Tap anywhere on the image to bring up the menu options, then tap Options on the bottom left of the screen. Note that if you're taking a photo directly and want to load it up as a wallpaper straight away, you can pick up the process here after taking the snap.

From the menu that appears, tap Use image, then Set as wallpaper. And that's all there is to it – once you return to the Homescreen, you'll see your chosen image is now set in the background, giving your Nokia C5-03 a fresh new look that's personal to you.
