Nokia High Accuracy Indoor Positioning: versatile indoor GPS system for your Nokia

GPS is a useful addition to any mobile phone, but it's generally designed for outdoor use – for helping you navigate from A to B. But what about indoor use? How about putting the same principles to good use to make sure your belongings don't go missing? That's exactly what Nokia Research Centre has done, and we have all the details after the cut.

The clever chaps at Nokia have come up with Nokia High Accuracy Indoor Positioning, which – they claim – is the most accurate indoor positioning system in the world.

It's a concept as simple as it is impressive. An infrastructure of easy-to-install indoor beacons build an indoor framework much like the road maps you're used to seeing when using Ovi Maps outdoors.

Combined with software on board your Nokia that monitors your position to within 30cm accuracy, the system is able to pinpoint exactly where you are, and give you directions to specific points, and exactly how far they are away.

The whole thing is shown off to impressive effect in a video surfaced by our friends at Nokia Conversations, and uses the example of an airport terminal. In the video, not only is the Nokia High Accuracy Indoor Positioning system able to provide directions all the way to a specific gate, but it is also shown suggesting retail locations that may be of interest along the way – like a shop that sells umbrellas if it's raining outside.

You can even use it to keep track of your belongings – stick a beacon in your bag, for example, and your phone will alert you if you leave it lying around somewhere, and exactly where you left it.

Impressive stuff indeed, and the two-minute clip is well worth watching. Check it out for yourself, then give us your thoughts on this clever Nokia tech in the Comments below.
