The Nokia N8 has ruled the Nokia roost for quite a while now, and with good reason. But now we have the Nokia X7 to get excited about, it's time to put the two head to head and see which one comes out on top in which areas. Join us after the cut for the low-down!
Until a week or so ago, if you told us you were looking to upgrade to a high-end media-friendly smartphone in the next few months we'd have had no hesitation in recommending the Nokia N8.
But then the Nokia X7 broke cover and gave media lovers a whole new proposition to think about, throwing in the Symbian Anna upgrade for good measure.
Picking a winner from this two over-achievers is no easy task, so let's start by reminding ourselves of what they have to offer.

The gorgeous Nokia N8 delivers an awful lot for the media-lover in a surprisingly compact package. The screen size measures a medium-sized 3.5-inches across, but it's an AMOLED panel with a 360 x 640 resolution, so whatever you're viewing is guaranteed to be pin-sharp and beautifully detailed.
The Nokia N8 boasts a stunning 12-megapixel camera complete with wide-angle lens, Xenon flash, 720p video recording and an HDMI out port for hooking up to your HD TV.
With web TV, desktop Flash, optimised video streaming and playback support, the Nokia N8 is ideal for enjoying your favourite TV and video content on the go.

There's no doubt that entertainment is right at the top of the Nokia X7's agenda. Things get off to a good start with probably the Nokia X7's hero feature – that spacious 4-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen.
Whether you're watching video, checking out photos or simply browsing the web, the Nokia X7 is the ideal smartphone for the job. And speaking of video, you get on-demand web TV built in, while the camera supports 720p video recording too.
The ARM 680MHz processor has plenty of grunt to keep things ticking over nicely, and the Nokia X7 will also launch with the latest Symbian Anna OS baked right in.
And the winner is...
Both of these powerful Nokias have a lot to offer the media-loving smartphone user. Both offer the same display technology and resolution, they're both attractive touchscreen all-rounders and both will have Symbian Anna on board – the Nokia X7 natively and the Nokia N8 via update.
The difference comes down to whether you're more interested in consuming media, or creating it. If it's the former you're interested in, the Nokia X7's bigger overall screen size – 4-inches versus 3.5-inches – is enough to shade things, even though the Nokia N8 features an HDMI out port for connecting to a bigger screen.
If you're more of a creative type, then we can't look past the Nokia N8's fantastic 12-megapixel camera, which for our money is the best camera on any smartphone on the market today.
Ultimately, both the Nokia X7 and the Nokia N8 are superb smartphones, and neither of them is obviously superior overall; they simply focus on different strengths. If you're into creating media, we'd lean towards the Nokia N8; if you're more of a media consumer, then we'd go for the Nokia X7. Either way, though, you're a winner.
