Skype is one of the most popular services worldwide for keeping in touch, whether its with friends and loved ones in far-flung places or just with your mates closeby who're also signed up to the VoIP service. Join us as we pick out the best Nokia phones for Skype.

While many rival handsets still don't support Skype, with Nokia you're covered by a dedicated Symbian app that makes both text and voice calls simplicity itself.

So what else is needed? An internet connection is a must-have, ideally one you're using via Wi-Fi as data charges can stack up if you're using your phone's data connection. Voice calling is possible on all phones with the Skype app installed, and of course there's text chat too.

Let's look at our favourite Nokias for keeping in touch via Skype, arranged into three price brackets to make sure there's something for everyone:

High-end Nokia for Skype: Nokia C7

The Nokia C7 is a great smartphone for any kind of communication, and Skype is no exception. The latest version of Skype for Symbian^3 is designed specifically for the larger screen size of the flagship C Series smartphone, and offers instant notification updates and support for video, image and other file transfers.

And if you're indulging in a bit of Skype-to-Skype calling via 3G or Wi-Fi, you'll find the new SILK voice encryption tech will bring your loved ones' voices across clearer than ever.

Mid-range Nokia for Skype: Nokia C5-03

The Nokia C5-03 is an affordable mid-ranger that's well suited to keeping in touch via Skype. You get an ample 3.2in touchscreen, which - particularly in landscape mode - is ideal for typing out chat messages.

Once you've downloaded the dedicated Skype app for Symbian S60 v5, meanwhile, you can pin it directly to your Homescreen to go straight into the VoIP program with a single tap.

Entry-level Nokia for Skype: Nokia 5230

Even if your budget doesn't stretch to the Nokia C5-03 showcased above, for the purposes of Skype you're hardly any worse off opting for the solid Nokia 5230 instead. After all, it also boasts a 3.2in touchscreen and Symbian S60 v5.

The only real downside is that it doesn't come with Wi-Fi, so you'll have to connect with your Nokia 5230's 3G connection, but once you do you're equipped with everything you need.

Worth considering: Nokia E5?

For a decent mid-range alternative that adds a full QWERTY keyboard into the mix, the competitively priced Nokia E5 is well worth a look. Don't be overly concerned that it's billed as a business phone: the Nokia E5 is a true all-rounder, and even if its 2.4in screen is non-touch, that full keyboard will come in mighty handy in all kinds of ways.
