Looking to keep up with the latest news, sport, weather and other daily happenings on your Nokia C5-03 from one of the UK's most respected news sources? Then you need The Guardian app, and we're taking a closer look after the cut.
The Guardian is best known as a daily broadsheet in the UK, but it's also made the switch to online news provider better than most traditional news sources. So we had particularly high hopes when downloading this little app and firing it up for the first time.
The start-up interface is well laid out, and puts a good selection of content at your fingertips right from the start. The main window is dominated by headline thumbnails of the top three news stories, while below that is a carousel of the four leading image galleries.
Above this is a pair of tabs enabling you to switch between the latest stories and the top trending stories as your default view, while above that are two contextual icons either side of The Guardian logo, which change depending on what you're viewing.
What isn't immediately clear at the start is that you can scroll down on the main window to reveal the top stories in other categories below the Galleries section, led by Sport, Culture and Features articles. You can change both the categories on display and how many stories are shown, however, by tapping the Settings icon at the top right of the screen.
Selecting a specific article is as simple as you'd expect – simply tap on the headline and you're taken through to the full article. Once there, you can set it as a favourite, or share it with a friend via email or Facebook.
One of the biggest challenges in presenting the content from such a busy news source as The Guardian on the mobile interface is keeping things simple while still making it quick and easy to access the content you're looking for, and for our money this app does the job well.
At the bottom of the screen at all times are four softkeys. When on the homepage one of these is reserved as an instant route through to view all sections, putting the full kaleidoscope of the news service's content just a fingertap away.
The other three softkeys are given over to customisable shortcuts. You're given the choice of pinning not only your favourite news sections to these shortcuts, but also useful functions such as Search or direct routes through to your Favourites, the most viewed stories or audio clips.
In all, it's a clever and comprehensive app, and one that will always keep you on top of what's going on in your world. Which is what it's all about, really.
