Need better protection for your Nokia C5-03 than the standard Symbian S60 5th Edition screen lock? Then you need MazeLock, and we're taking a closer look at this innovative little app after the cut.

There's certainly nothing wrong with the standard button press/screen tap combo that serves as the Nokia C5-03's screen lock. It certainly keeps you from making any long-distance calls or changing any settings unwittingly while it's tucked away in your pocket, for example.

But if you're worried about leaving your phone lying around in the office, or little hands picking it up behind your back at home, then you'll want something more secure.

The concept behind MazeLock is simple: you enter a finger-swipe action between dots on a three-by-three grid on screen (think Noughts & Crosses) and you have to repeat that exact action rather than the standard screen unlock process, to gain access to your Nokia C5-03.

There are a few cosmetic tweaks you can play with, such as the background image displayed, the font colour and line colour, and the time and date format, but ultimately this is a simple app with a simple aim.

As such, it does its job well. Your unlock motion can be as simple as swiping between two adjacent dots on screen, or swiping a convoluted pattern involving all nine. When setting a new code you have to enter it twice to confirm, which should cut out mistakes.

MazeLock generally does its job well, and all the key features you need are in the free version so for us there's no compelling reason to shell out the £3 for the full version.

Our only criticism is that there's no safety net at all should you forget your unlock pattern, so you'll have to reset your Nokia C5-03 completely, wiping all your on-board info. Surely a backup security question could be worked in somehow?
