Nokia 'hints' the Meego-powered Nokia N9 could be weeks away

There are two ways of saying things: you can either come out and say it directly, or you can make your point loud and clear without going anywhere near the actual words. And if we're not mistaken, that's exactly what Nokia Conversations has done in not talking about the much-rumoured Nokia N9.

The official Nokia blog is about as close as it gets to a mouthpiece for Nokia itself, so you can be sure you won't hear a peep about new devices there unless Nokia is ready to talk about them. But that doesn't mean there isn't scope for reading between the lines, and an intriguing new post entitled Future devices and innovations at Nokia is loaded with interesting hints if you know what you're looking for.

The internet is awash with rumours at the moment that Nokia is preparing to launch the long-awaited MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 (or the Nokia N950 as some are referring to it).

Even though Nokia has pulled out of the MeeGo project to focus its smartphone efforts on Windows Phone 7 instead, it's widely believed that the Nokia N9 – which was set to be the first MeeGo-powered device to hit the market and was close to finished when Nokia announced the shift to Windows Phone 7 – will be launched anyway at some point this year after all the work Nokia invested in developing it.

Those rumours hit fever pitch recently when a leaked teaser video for what is clearly the Nokia N9 started doing the rounds, only to be quickly whipped down by Nokia. So what does this have to do with Nokia Conversations and its seemingly random post about future devices and innovations at Nokia? Quite a lot, actually, and it comes back to reading between the lines.

A couple of posts over at The Handheld Blog and My Nokia Blog have dissected the post a little more closely, and are suggesting that in fact it's a cryptic reveal that the Nokia N9 could be just weeks away from being launched.

To start with, the post is accompanied by a classic image of curtains at a concert venue, symbolising something waiting to be revealed behind.

But it's in the text itself that the real juicy details are to be found. The post sets the scene quite clearly by reminding us that “just a couple of days ago a whole fresh crop [of rumours] appeared on a number of websites regarding a new mystery device. But it should be no surprise that new things are in the wings somewhere”.

That's as obvious a reference to the Nokia N9 as you're going to get, and saying that it's “no surprise that new things are in the wings” suggests the handset is clearly on its way (as well as being another neat reference to the stage metaphor used by the article image!) From there, though, the post goes on at length about innovation, seemingly leaving the specific example of the Nokia N9 behind.

But it's just building to another cryptic reference: “at the moment, of course, our technology is far from natural. There’s nothing natural about icons and drop-down lists and tickboxes. It would probably be better if you could just swipe through your apps, wouldn’t it?” Of course, that last point is exactly one of the innovations MeeGo is set to offer, and one we were very much looking forward to seeing on the Nokia N9. Still, the post saves the best for last. “But the possibilities are endless… and very exciting. We can’t wait to show you more – maybe a sneak peek at 'Jessie’s Girl' – in the weeks to come”.

Nokia may have taken the Nokia N9 teaser video down, but it doesn't seem to have escaped its memory that the song playing in the background was... Jessie's Girl, an 80s classic from Rick Springfield.

So what do you reckon? Is there any other way to read things, or are we right in saying Nokia has just confirmed we can expect the Nokia N9 to be announced within the next few weeks?
