A touch of gold never goes amiss, which is why we can't take our eyes off the newly announced 18ct Nokia Oro and its gilt-edged goodness. But it's by no means the first gold-festooned Nokia we've come across. Join us after the cut as we count down our five favourites.
Dipping our favourite gadgets in gold is nothing new, but the fact that we keep doing it proves that deep down we're all fans of a bit of bling sometimes, even if under the surface it's exactly the same device in every sense that really matters. Nokia has just announced the Nokia Oro, an 18-carat overhaul to the Nokia C7 that catapults the Symbian^3 device from likeable smartphone all-rounder to ultra-exclusive object of desire.
Nokia Oro 18-carat smartphone launched
So where does the Nokia Oro fit in the pantheon of gold-dipped Nokia handsets down the years? Join us as we count down our top five...
5 Nokia 6700 classic Gold Edition
We're not sure what the Nokia 6700 classic did to be picked for a full golden makeover, but the result is an eye-catching phone that looks just stunning in its new 18-carat clothes. Nokia dished up matching gold wallpapers to finish off the job, and while its appearance suggests otherwise, the golden Nokia 6700 classic was actually quite reasonably priced in the end, and even came free on some contracts.
4 Nokia N95 gold and diamond edition
From one extreme to the other, and with its £12,000 price tag this ultra limited edition Nokia N95 was never going to be classed as cheap. There were only 10 units made, but each was adorned with 18-carat solid white gold and dipped in no fewer than 325 diamonds adding up to 3.30 carats. You could even customise the handset with your own initials – most likely because if you have that kind of money to spend, you'll want everyone to know just who you are.
3 Nokia N97 mini Gold Edition
The Nokia N97 mini was already easy on the eye, but when Nokia decided to give it the golden treatment early last year it became a sight to behold. It was an understated makeover too, with the handset itself dipped in gold plating and Nokia replacing all instances of chrome and other metals around the handset with 18 carat gold accents. The obligatory gold wallpapers sealed the deal, and the finished product came in not too far the other side of £500 – a not unreasonable price to pay for a touch of bling.
2 Nokia 8800 Sirocco Gold
The Nokia 8800 always was a handset aimed more at the fashion-conscious than the feature-conscious, but the Gold version took things to a whole new level and really brought its high-end allure to the fore. Once again it's our old friend, 18-carat gold plating, that's responsible for this clamshell handset's impeccable appearance, and while a price tag approaching £1,000 suggests a phone suited to those with more money than sense, when the result looks this good we're not going to argue.
1 Nokia Oro
Yes, it's easy to put the Nokia Oro on top of the pile as it's the newest of the golden bunch, but for our money – and sadly it probably won't be enough to afford one of these babies – it deserves its spot. Not only does it look fantastic, with the Nokia C7 making a great canvas for a bling overhaul, but extra touches like a sapphire crystal and top-quality leather casing elevate it from being simply a phone dipped in gold to an elegant and understated visual statement that has a smartphone of real substance underneath. What do you make of our list - does the Nokia Oro deserve its place at the head of the golden pack, and do you think golden gadgets like these are worth spending money on?
