We all know Nokia plans to eventually phase out Symbian from its smartphone portfolio as its involvement with Windows Phone 7 develops, but Nokia boss Stephen Elop has assured Symbian users that Nokia will continue to support that platform for years to come.
Speaking to the Chinese branch of Nokia Conversations, Elop revealed that Nokia would continue to provide software updates to Symbian devices “until at least 2016”.
Symbian Anna: Discover the updates on offer
“We are in a period where the investment in Symbian absolutely continues,” Elop said. “Even as we go through a transition to our primary smartphone platform, Windows Phone, you will see that continued investment and I know there have been questions about how long does that continue and we've now been very clear about that – that software updates to Symbian devices are expected until at least 2016. So there's a long history still to be paved for Symbian in the future.”
That'll come as great news to the millions of Symbian users out there, but we shouldn't really be surprised. After all, in just the last couple of months we've seen Nokia dishing up the Symbian Anna software update, and some top-notch Symbian hardware in the Nokia E6 and Nokia X7. And thanks to the Nokia CEO's comments we can now look forward to plenty more Symbian magic for a good few years still.
