Yesterday we revealed the news that a new version of Meego has been released, including a smartphone-friendly Developer Edition. And now, thanks to one such developer, we can get a good look at Meego 1.2 running on a Nokia N900 smartphone.

The latest Meego release is aimed primarily at tablets and smartphones – since Nokia's about-turn to focus on Windows Phone 7, Meego doesn't have a primary hardware partner, after all. But users of the Meego-compatible Nokia N900 are still able to get their hands on Meego 1.2 in the form of a Developer Edition, boasting all the core features of the OS but without phone-specific abilities such as voice calling. The idea is to give developers a smartphone environment to play around with Meego 1.2, and build those phone-specific functions on top. But there's another significant point to consider here.

Nokia is widely expected to be preparing a single Meego-based phone for release – the Nokia N9 or Nokia N950 depending on who you listen to – in order to showcase all the work it did together with Intel on the platform.

It's not likely to launch with specifically the Meego 1.2 release on board, but seeing the latest release running on a Nokia smartphone still gives us a fairly accurate sneak preview of what we have to look forward to.
