Symbian^3 smartphones, such as the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01 are now being offered the Ovi Store firmware update version 2.08.042, which brings with it a host of updates.
If you've been experiencing intermittent drop outs from the Nokia Ovi Store this week, like we have on our Nokia N8, then you'll be glad to know that it's because a new Ovi Store client has been rolling out. You'll find that once the update his you'll be prompted to automatically download and install it.
Ovi Store version 2.08.042 is a 4.77MB download, so easily handled Over the Air (OTA) and takes less than a minute to install. On the surface, the update hasn't made any changes to the physical look and feel of the Nokia Ovi Store but it certainly feels more stable and nippier to move around in.
There are big changes to the back end of the Ovi Store, such as device and market specific rankings being adding to the 'Top Free' and 'Best Seller' lists, which will help you choose the best apps in your region.
However, it seems the biggest change is in the way updates to apps you've already downloaded are handled. Ovi Store is taking on a greater responsibility by managing the updates rather than it being a manual process. We checked this out and you'll find on your account page a new Updates tag appear at the top whenever there is a fresh app to download and launch.

Users are able to review and apply updates to apps they’ve downloaded from the Ovi Store. The server now sends version numbers automatically down to the client on the phone.
Nokia's algorithm for delivering 'Top Free' and 'Best Sellers' has been tweaked, to "make app and game listings more relevant for consumers". Internal rankings are now filtered better by device and region, so that popularity in one niche won't skew the whole.
Finding relevant apps has been made easier, with the addition of a “users who downloaded x also downloaded y” system.
