Words are the life blood of every language, and it can be frustrating not knowing what a word means – either in your own language or a foreign tongue. Can Dictionary and Translation Pro make the difference? We find out on the Nokia C5-03.

Whether you're trying to read a menu written in a foreign language, or simply get the gist of a technical document written in your own, language can be a real barrier to understanding. Dictionary & Translation Pro, however, rolls an international phrase book and a comprehensive dictionary into one, putting a database of a million words plus no more than a couple of screen taps away.
The Dictionary & Translation Pro app itself is small and straightforward to use, and the reason is simple: the database of words, translations and the supplied thesaurus is all based online, rather than installed on your phone itself.
There are two reasons why this makes sense: first, it stops the app itself from being a bulky download that will take up loads of space on your Nokia C5-03, and secondly because it allows the online dictionary to be constantly updated so that you're always tapping into the latest info when you use the app.
But there's a glaring downside here too: one of the most obvious uses for an app like this is to translate words or phrases when you're visiting a foreign country, but having to go online every time you want to do so might end up costing more than the holiday itself in data roaming fees.
Dictionary & Translation Pro is one of those apps that is kept free of charge by having in-app advertising, and sadly this is more intrusive here than in most other examples we've come across.
The main menu, for instance, gives you six options, one above the other. The very top option – Enter Word – speaks for itself, but the next three down are all promoting or advertising other apps or services, which is a bit excessive in our book.
In practice, the core dictionary and translation features work well enough, but the ability to only work with one word at a time is a serious limitation. That aside, the way information is presented also leaves quite a bit to be desired, with no real formatting to break up the lines of text on screen.
We must say we were mightily disappointed in Dictionary & Translation Pro. It certainly has its uses, and the price is right, but we can't help but feeling trying to do a little bit less, but doing it well, would have been a better formula here.
