Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone with 3.9-inch screen launched

The Nokia N9 smartphone, powered by the MeeGo operating system, has been unveiled at Nokia Connection 2011 in Singapore. Billed as Nokia's first ever pure touchscreen device, this amazing looking device typifies 'the next disruption'.

The Nokia N9 is official and what an amazing device it looks. The 3.9-inch AMOLED touchscreen comes with a curved glass, so it's easier to view the screen from any angle, as well as gain instant access to apps and services.

Everything about the Nokia N9 is geared towards single and simple swipe gestures, making it a truly innovative and intuitive smartphone. So simple in fact that whenever you are in an application, you just swipe from the edge of the screen to go back home.

Nokia has looked at the industrial design of hardware and software for the Nokia N9 that is sure to crop up in future devices. The camera is a powerful 8-Megapixel variant with auto-focus and  Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash and super wide 28mm lens. This means you'll be able to take full advantage of HD video, as well as true 16:9 aspect ratio for photos and video.

We like the fact there are three distinct home screens, Applications, Events, Open Applications, which have been designed around the way people most commonly use their smartphone.

Other killer features include NFC (Near Field Communication), so you can connect to NFC-enabled devices, as well  as share content like photos or business cards via NFC. Then there is Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Plus support, which turns standard stereo audio into surround sound, which is the first time we've seen this on any smartphone.

The Nokia N9 is set to launch later this year in three distinct colours, you'll be able to choose from Black, Cyan or Magenta, with a host of peripherals designed to compliment your choice also expected to hit the markets.

Pricing for the Nokia N9 will be announced closer to the actual launch. What do you think, is this the 'next disruption' you were expecting? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments below.

im not too fussed about the fact it has no hard keyboard. il just keep my n900 too. and use that as a gaming/internet device. and have the n9 as a phone and hd capture device. but im sure because of the fact it runs linux. the usb port can have allsort to stuff plugged into it has input. i.e keyboard and games controler.

So this Nokia N9 is running on MeeGo, but future Nokia phones will be running under Microsoft Window… so any more support for MeeGo?

Nice constructive comment. I imagine you’re one of the sheep with an iphone. Grow up.

There is no point having cores and more cores. It’s just a marketing strategy to entice consumers to part with their money. For example, Windows XP do not run multi-threaded applications so having a 12 cores makes no difference compared to a single core, as long as the core frequency of the processors are the same when running one application.

Further more, more cores just create more heat and use more battery and it only serves to encourage bloat-ware. Nobody gains. Everyone loses.

What is more important is reliability and the ability to get the job done with minimal fuss and maximum efficiency like what Nokia does, but that’s not sexy and useless as a sales pitch. That’s why Nokia is number 1 in the world. It works.

As long as they leave Windows out of Nokia phones, I will be buying one. In fact, I’m buying 2 of these, black one one for me and the pink one for my partner, just in case it is the last non-Windows Nokia phones to ever launch.

The first and the last of the Meego Nokia phone. IT will be a classic and worth many times its original price as a collector’s item in 10 years time. If not for anything else, it will be me paying my last respects and bereavement money to a true company of the people, for the people.

Long live software, design and products for the people.

It’s a win win situation if you ask me!

I am a N8 user at present but with this impressive device about to launch, who knows what Nokia has up it’s sleeve waiting in the wings in the coming months, whether it’s Windows or Symbian it is going to be something to marvel at i’m sure.

Hi All, Meego as a aprt of Nokia strategy is a n on going project at Nokia R&D for software based future disruption in User Interface and User experience along with Applications. Nokia gave away hundreds of N950 a companion device to N9 for developers only to pip up app development efforts.

Hence Meego updates are coming yeah thats absolutely true. Nokia will also launch one meego device per year till the Windows OS platform does not fully replaces symbian OS in core western markets. Although symbian OS(symbian^3) will live on till 2016 not only through updates but devices too in SEAP, Russia, Brazil and African market which is set for boom.

As per the information I heard N9 and Meego will be a luxury niche product on the lines of Apple products for changing Nokia’s high end brand perception and profit generation. As it is clear N9 and future meego devices are not only going to be technology disruption but superb WOW devices at expensive price tags; something Nokia needs to win back mindshare and enhanced revenues.

Saying that meego will have a significant market share but far less than windows or android which are meant for mass market but meego and N9 will be a niche like iphone with comaparatively less market share but more margins.

N9 is a direct competitor to iOS and iPhone………. and the verdict is simply clear bring on iPhone5 Mr. Jobs but the winner is Nokia N9 in all aspects: Industrial design, UX, Imaging, Audio, Connectivity, Hardware, Display, Software…. and Antennae too :-)

Nokia just need to lauch it asap and give it the marketing push a new history is all about to be written in a matter of 4 years. Game on Nokia

How on earth would it possibly launched in June when announced in June, this is a Nokia we’re talking about not a Apple, some rumors have been flying around suggesting a September release date.

i’ve had an N900 for 18mnths and just got the new E7 (symbian) The N900 feels solid, stable, dependable and highly capable. The E7? Well it’s a beauty but it’s frankly frustrating and hard work.To those in the know, the N900 laughs in the iphone’s face. The N9 will be even better. Why on earth didn’t they just tout this as their flagship?Forget windows
