Hack'n'slash, dungeon bashing, fight fest, call it what you will, the adventure genre of games has served the console market well over the years but it's something that just never sits right with handheld gaming.

If you've played Gods of War on any console then you'll have more than a slight feeling of deja vu. However, we have Argos fighting his way around ancient Greece. The graphics aren't the sharpest we've seen, even though it's being touted as a HD game, but they get the job done. You can move quite quickly around the screen and we found navigation was quick nimble and responsive.
There are signs of lag when moving between the various screens and encounters though, which results in slight pauses on the screen.
You move the character of Argos around the screen using an onscreen pad down in the left-hand corner of the screen. Meanwhile, your right thumb is used to control a couple of attack and defence buttons that allow you to get through the various assaults on your person. A bar across the top of the screen lets you see the level of health you have, so gauging whether to flee of fight is a trick you need to develop quite early on.
We have to admit you can pretty much switch off and just play Hero of Sparta HD on your Nokia N8 with no trouble. The maps and terrain are quite linear, so you can simply follow the path of least resistance and find the battle coming to you.
Hero of Sparta HD on the Nokia N8 isn't going to redefine the gaming world but it's fun and while you can get your hands on it for free, thanks to the summer bundle, we'd recommend it's well worth checking out – just remember to use the Wi-Fi connection as it's quite a hefty chunk of change otherwise.
