Nokia N9 Hands-On: What the experts think

It's finally here, and as far as we're concerned it's been well worth the wait. We're talking about the Nokia N9, of course, the new jewel in Nokia's N Series crown. But while we know where we stand, what has the rest of the technology press been saying about the Nokia N9? Let's take a look.

Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone with 3.9-inch screen launched

For us, the Nokia N9 ticks all the right boxes: it's good looking, the most advanced piece of mobile hardware Nokia has ever produced, and is packed with innovation.

There's no question, though, that the first impression the Nokia N9 makes is on the eyes – and we're not necessarily talking just about its attractive looks here, either. The gorgeous 3.9-inch touchscreen features the latest in touch panel technology to effectively bring the screen closer to the surface, and the visual results received special praise from Engadget: “The Clear Black AMOLED display is truly a sight to behold, with stunning viewing angles, a curved Gorilla Glass front, and some pretty excellent (for AMOLED) performance out in the sunlight.

“We compared it side by side with a Super LCD-equipped Incredible S and the N9 more than held its own. The screen is easily one of this new phone's great strengths, though we'd argue the intuitive UI, responsiveness, and eye-catching industrial design are pretty high up on that list too.”

High praise indeed, and that intuitive UI also attracted special mention from Slashgear in its video review: “There are some neat animations, too. The apps flip aside smoothly, the homescreen rising back up into view, and if you swipe a playing video off the screen, it continues running until it reaches the end... When you swipe away an app, you’re always taken to the homescreen pane you were looking at last, making it easier to move between apps without needing a pop-up task switcher as you’d find on Android, say.”

Pocket-lint, meanwhile, chose to wax lyrical about the design: “The Nokia N9 owes some of its looks to the N8, but the mantra here has been to go slimmer and more sophisticated. Nokia have designed some great handsets over the years, but the N9 is really something else: it’s stunning.”

In its detailed Hands-on review, meanwhile, Techradar focused attention on the exciting accessories launched alongside the Nokia N9, which work seamlessly in partnership with the new handset thanks to the clever use of Near-field technology (NFC): “The NFC capabilities of the Nokia N9 are used in an excellent manner thanks to some nifty accessories from the Finns to enable much simpler Bluetooth pairing.

“With the Nokia Play 360 range of speakers, a tap from the phone onto the unit will see the Bluetooth connection instantly set up, so no more messing about with pairing and syncing.

“It's an incredibly easy system and a solid reminder that Nokia is actually a brilliant innovation and design firm when it tries to be.”

Such high praise simply cranks up the desire factor for the Nokia N9 and we can't wait to get the superb new N Series superstar in our own hands for an extended play, so we can share our up-close-and-personal thoughts with you, our NokNok faithful!

In the meantime, why not give us your own impressions about which aspect of the stunning new Nokia N9 you find most exciting now that the dust has started to settle after its grand unveiling on Monday? As always, your opinions are always welcome in the Comments below...

Why Elop is still so stupid and cannot accept one simple thing: WP7 is dead. People want Meego/Maemo. We want more devices with Meego. I will not buy any WP7 phone. Elop is typical trojan horse. What must happened to realise this guy that WP7 is wrong way.

I’m a nokia fan and agree to everthing said above. I’ve been waiting for N9 since I heard about it months ago. Now nokia has decided to discontinue MeeGo, and will go with Windows for future models. Then shall we go for MeeGo ? Is it outdated already ? Nokia do not believe in MeeGo, even before it’s launched ?

Looks top notch, and shows just how crazy nokia is these days. We’ll kill symbian. No wait, not untill 2016. We’re not going with meego. No wait heres the n9. Quick rush out a wp7 phone or elop will look like the the ex ms employee he was. I honestly think elop will get the boot as the rest of nokia resists wp7 and forces meego onto the management. The company is just not unified and elop is to blame for it. Now the employees are showing elop that ditching meego was a stupid decision, and elops racing to make the wp7 os a non foregone conclusion. Hes not managing, hes trying to win.
