Nokia continues to show its commitment to the Symbian S60 5th Edition OS, found on older devices such as the Nokia 5230, Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini and Nokia 5800 by announcing a new firmware update bringing a host of new features.

The Symbian S60 5th Edition firmware update is set to start rolling out for all devices in the range and along with boosting stability and overall performance you’ll find a host of features have been added.

Tap into your Nokia C5-03

It seems the Nokia C6-00 and Nokia 5230 will be the first devices to start receiving the update, which begins today, with other models receiving the Symbian S60 5th Edition firmware update in the next few weeks.

When it comes to features you’ll find that Ovi Maps 3 SR6 will be a major addition to your Nokia 5230, Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini or Nokia 5800. So much so, it’s the same versiona as you’ll find in the Symbian Anna update for Symbian^3 smartphones, such as the Nokia X7 and Nokia E6.

This latest version is still free for life but you’ll find that public transport lines and check-in services to social networking sites have been added, so getting around and staying in touch has never been easier.

Nokia Browser v7.3, the same browser that can be found on Symbian Anna, will be making an appearance as part of the firmware update. It’s a faster, leaner browser with wider global language support, such as non-ASCII letters in Arabic as well as Chinese, and should make the whole web experience on your Nokia 5230, Nokia X6, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 slide a lot smoother.

It’s worth noting this rollout will be a staged event, so you’ll need to keep an eye on your smartphones Software Updater page. If you’re looking to take advantage of the firmware update then you can do so using OTA (Over the Air) services or through Nokia Ovi Suite. To check if the update has hit go to Settings>Tools>Software Update.

However, the quickest way to check is to type *#0000# into the Call box and then select Options. Before carrying our any update it pays to backup your smartphone.

    I’m still waiting for it to roll out for my 5230. Getting rather impatient. I even tried downloading the newest one available with Navifirm, but it seems CTR firmwares don’t work.

    I think all of you S60-users out there know that devices with this Symbian S60 OS can be very slowly. Sometimes you need to wait many seconds until an application or a folder opens. This can be very annoying, especially in the gallery when you want to show some pictures or videos to your friends very quickly.

    Now there is a trick to make your S60 mobile phone faster, this trick is so crazy that you won’t believe it until you tested it. But don’t think I am joking, just test it by yourself. So let’s start with the tutorial
    1.) Change your phones’ date to the 01.05.2005

    2.) Go to the calendar

    3.) Now we need to create two new to-do’s (Options > New entry > To-do)

    4.) These two to-do’s need to have the following information:

    - 1. To-do:

    Subject: Speed
    Due date: 04.08.2005
    Priority: High

    - 2. To-do:

    Subject: Qoukie
    Due date: 04.08.2005
    Priority: Low

    5.) Confirm the both to-do notes with “Done”, but don’t close the calendar application.

    6.) Choose: Options > To-do view

    7.) Mark “Speed” as done, after that mark “Qoukie” as done.

    8.) Now you can close the calendar.

    9.) Change the phones’ date back to the actual day.

    10.) Enjoy your faster device!

    This tutorial is unbelivable, huh? But it really works! Is this an easter-egg built into the S60 OS? To be honest we don’t know, but it works and this is the only important thing…when u format all in ur phone, redo this step

    @Sharma – we’re afraid that’s all te info we have at the moment. It doesn’t sound like there are any 5800 specific homescreen updates this time around

    Well I em already using C6v40 port CFW to my N97mini, new fast browser and smiley icons, the maps i had to integrate on CFW myself, it’s good but, there is already bug on browser activity COPY&PASTE….does not work correctly!

    Seems to be a bit of a delay. The command prompt indicates no new update even though the software updater says different. I’m from Kenya by the way and waiting for the roll out is all there is to do for now. Cha cha.
