Millions of Nokia users around the globe use Nokia Maps every day, and Nokia Beta Labs has just outed Nokia Maps beta 3.08, adding another set of new features to the mix. But if Nokia Maps is Nokia's best kept software secret, it's not going to stay that way for long, as the web version is being opened up to other manufacturers' devices too.

Nokia Maps 3.08 Beta: five reasons to start your engines

Nokia Maps beta 3.08 itself is only for Nokia devices, instead it will be a beta version of the existing Nokia Maps that other platforms will be getting, and one that only offers a selection of the features we've come to take for granted on our favourite Nokia mobile phones.

The much-loved offline mapping, for instance, which allows Nokia users to enjoy full-function mapping and navigation even when a data connection is unavailable, isn't part of the deal. What is offered in this initial beta is basic route plotting from A to B, though without turn-by-turn navigation or voice commands, and the ability to find your own location.

To be honest, the prospect of seeing Nokia Maps running on an iPhone or Android device is one that might take a bit of getting used to, but it's a clear sign of just how capable Nokia's mapping and navigation package is.

So keep your eyes open for Nokia Maps running on other devices – you can try it out for yourself by pointing your non-Nokia phone's browser at m.maps.ovi.com. If you have had a look, drop us a line with your thoughts in the Comments below.

As much as I like Nokia Maps, I can’t see this Lite version competing much with Google Maps which will still have more features and the essential turn by turn navigation, + if I’m honest better routing than Nokia Maps.

The trump card of Nokia Maps is the offline navigation which of course Google Maps doesn’t offer(yet), but it’s clear that will not be a feature of the open release, and even if there was a paid version with offline navigation, Sygic GPS is cheap on Android and from my experience offers far better routing, and looks prettier too, especially in 3D view(only an awful clumsy UI holds back Sygic).
