Location-based check-in service Foursquare is an international phenomenon, with over 10 million active users around the globe. And that number should continue to rise thanks to a new Foursquare app for Nokia Series 40 phones that adds new features and wider compatibility.

Foursquare has been around for a few years now, and allows you to tap into localised services, deals and the like and share your location with contacts by “checking in” through your mobile phone. To date there have been more than 600 million check-ins worldwide, but for the most part these have typically been on feature-rich, high end smartphones.

That picture is changing, however, and as you'd expect Nokia has a lot to do with it. Version one of the Foursquare app for Nokia Series 40 devices already blurred the lines between the functions you'd expect from feature phones and smartphones, and the second version takes the notion even further.

Foursquare now dovetails with Nokia Maps to show your location more accurately and provide improved integration with localised services. You can also check out nearby venues your friends have visited thanks to the Explore section, while localised special offers are now displayed too and you can add fresh locations yourself directly from your handset.

On top of all these new features, Nokia has also extended Foursquare's reach to more countries than ever before, so that more of the 600 million-odd Nokia Series 40 phones in use today around the world can take advantage.

It's simply another step in Series 40's ongoing push to deliver smartphone features with feature phone simplicity and affordability. You can download Foursquare for Series 40 directly from the Ovi Store today. Once you've done so, feel free to tell us what you think!
