Unofficial drop test: Nokia C7 survives, iPhone 4 doesn't

We spend a lot of time talking about how well made Nokia phones are, and the high quality of the materials used. And now the Nokia C7 has proved our point perfectly, surviving a 7-foot drop test that was too much for an iPhone 4.

Now we'll say this right at the start – we're certainly not endorsing dropping your phone to the ground to test its strength, and there's no guarantee that even if someone else's phone does survive such a drop that yours will too.

But a group of Nokia mobile fans decided to risk disaster all the same by subjecting the Nokia C7 and an Apple iPhone 4 to a seven-foot drop onto the hard ground, and filming the results.

The results were pretty emphatic: the Nokia C7, while a couple of scratches worse for wear, was otherwise unscathed, and switched on straight away without a hassle.

The good news for iPhone fans is that the iPhone 4 also switched on no problem. The bad news, though, was that the glass-based shell shattered in a big way, pretty much writing off its uselessness.

Now it's worth noting that even gadgets specifically labelled as “rugged” are typically only guaranteed to survive drops of around a metre, so it's not a criticism of the iPhone that it didn't get through this extreme drop test undamaged. But it does speak volumes for the strength of the Nokia C7 that it did manage to escape damage, and for Nokia's build quality in general.

Check out the clip below for the full visual details, then let us know: has your Nokia survived some major drops or other abuse you thought would prove too much for it at some point? Give us the details in the Comments below!

Don’t take this the wrong way or anything plus I’m a Nokia fanboy also, but even though I like the conclusion, your experiment isn’t exactly scientific.
For a start the iPhone may have just been unlucky enough to hit a small pebble and the C7 NOT. I used to design reliability test systems for Nokia an I know exactly what they are capable of withstanding…some great and others not so great.
The ‘drop test’ is conducted from various heights strapped to something not to dissimilar to a guillotine. It is positioned at various angles and dropped at a controlled rate (simulates gravitational acceleration) until it just centimetres from the ground, and the released (to simulate free space falling). The unit will be filmed at over 10,000 frames per second to analyse twist and bend mechanics and finally inspected for physical damage and operation. This is just one of a suite of tests done to rapidly simulate a 3 year life span of the product in under 3 months. Others include minus (-)40 +85 degC at 95% humidity temperature cycling for a few days, twist and bend test.
Tough little buggers, some of these phones.
