The Nokia E6 is the latest business-focused smartphone in the E Series range, and brings with it not only a QWERTY keyboard-full touchscreen combination, but Symbian Anna too – the latest update to Symbian^3. It's an exciting combo, and here we take you through some good first steps to get out the way when you turn it on for the first time.

Nokia's QWERTY handsets have been a central part of its business for years, but the Nokia E6 injects some genuine innovation to the tried-and-tested formula by also boasting a capacitive touchscreen.

It's the first such smartphone to hit the market, and gives you the ultimate in flexibility in getting to grips with Symbian Anna – the operating system that ties everything together on board.

So you've finished ogling the Nokia E6's smartly elegant lines, you've hit the Power button and your new smartphone has just sprung into life for the first time ever. What next? Well, here are five suggestions to get you started. The rest is up to you.

1 Set the time and date
There's not much point in a business phone that isn't running on the right time, so as a matter of form we'd suggest getting this out the way first. To do so, just tap the Date/Time homescreen widget, and you can make all the changes you need – including setting that all-important alarm.

2 Set up email
We'll bet you're dying to test drive the Nokia E6's beautifully crafted QWERTY keyboard, so let's get your email set up so you can get stuck in without further ado. Being a business phone the Nokia E6 is an email wonder, and you can access the Mail application through the homescreen widget, or the dedicated hardware key. Once there follow the prompts to set up your email – all leading platforms are supported, including Microsoft Exchange.

3 Import your contacts
Setting up your contacts list is another key pillar in getting your new business phone up to speed, and with the Nokia E6 you'll be done in moments. Stick all your contents on a microSD card, pop it into your Nokia E6 then hit Menu, Contacts, SIM numbers and Copy All to Phone. Job done.

4 Set up speed dial
Time is money, as someone rich once said, so why waste yours wading through your contacts list when you can set your Nokia E6 to dial your favourite contacts with a single button press? To do it, go to Menu, Settings, Calling and Speed Dialling. From there, pick a number and select a contact to assign to it.

5 Optimise your battery
With all its many features the Nokia E6 is likely to keep you busy, so you won't want to run out of battery any sooner than you need to. To eke out extra battery life and turn off non-essential features, simply tap on the top right of the homescreen, press the Battery icon and click Power Saving Mode.

We'll be running through these and other essential tasks on the Nokia E6 in more detail in time to come, but in the meantime we hope you enjoy taking your first steps with your new business phone!

I own E6 and have been using it now for a coule of months. I really like it and especially its very good UI and very nice touch screen. However, there is one a bit annoying “feature”. I travel a lot and when I am away i dont want to update any of my social networks or even emails without knowing it. Ok, so I can turn of download of data but the problem is that all of the time, continously and very often I get this message “connection unavailable”. Yes, I know that! I do not it want to tell me it a million times. Can I turn this “feature off” somewhere easily so that I can still mantain phone online?
