Nokia has long been one of the leading forces behind the development of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, and its latest step along NFC's evolutionary path should be of interest to fans of evolution of a different kind. Read on for the full details.

Nokia leading the way as NFC takes hold

Nokia has teamed up with the Museum of London to equip certain exhibits with NFC tags, allowing NFC-capable smartphone users to pick up additional info about the exhibit, such as additional links, images and download resources, simply by waving their phone over the tag.

Aside from direct information about exhibits, the tags will also be used as a vehicle to promote the Museum's social network, and to offer dedicated apps for download and vouchers for the Museum's shops and cafés.

“NFC Technology has the potential to change how we interact with our visitors,” said Museum of London marketing manager Vicky Lee. “By simply touching tags located throughout both our venues, visitors can delve deeper into London's story in an immediate and engaging way.”

While the tags were developed and provided by Nokia, they will work with any NFC-capable handset. The Nokia C7 is set to have its NFC capabilities switched on just as soon as the Symbian Anna update lands over the next few weeks, while further NFC-capable Nokia handsets are expected to touch down in the UK in due course.
