One of the simplest ways to personalise your phone is by installing a new theme, and Ovi Store gives you a wide range of free themes to choose from. Here we're taking a closer look at the Insignia Star theme.
We installed the Insignia Star theme on a Nokia X7 running Symbian Anna – disappointingly it's not compatible with Symbian S60 devices.
It comprises an colourful background, minor tweaks to the likes of the battery and signal strength bars, and a whole new set of default icons. Given how attractive the new Symbian Anna icons are, this last point is an interesting one, as apart from providing a change from the norm, normally the point of themes is to look good.
So how do the Insignia Star icons compare to the default Symbian Anna ones? Well, it's a mixed report, really, as we quite like the bold and distinctive icon images, but their more squared off design makes it feel like you've downgraded from Symbian Anna's pleasantly rounded icons back to the Symbian^3 look.
And interestingly, while all the main icons are covered, it seems that the Social icon isn't, with the result that it leaves your app menu grid full of square icons – except for one.
The Insignia Star image itself is also rather curious. It looks like a multi-coloured starburst with a big white star sitting above... well, an insignia.
It's certainly not unattractive, but like the rest of the Insignia Star theme, it just falls short of the mark.
