Nokia's Beta Labs has rolled out an update to the extremely cool Sleeping Screen app – the low-profile clock and reminder system that gives your sleeping phone a stylish way of displaying info without draining your battery. Also read: Rise and shine for the Nokia Sleeping Screen

Sleeping screen uses deliberately muted images and animations that use the minimum power on phones with AMOLED screens – including the Nokia N8, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia E7 and Nokia C6-01.

And thanks to this latest update, Nokia Sleeping Screen is now even better, as you can now define your own background images. Just pick a picture from your image gallery and the app will convert it into the special format required by Sleeping Screen. You can even choose a new, more subtle clock style to better show off your pictures.

Sleeping Screen will now also respect whatever orientation (landscape or portrait) you had your phone in when you locked it and maintain it in that state, which is useful if you use like to use your phone as a clock by laying it on its side.
