The Nokia 700 is the latest Symbian handset to take a bow from Nokia, and the first to feature the new Symbian Belle operating system. Here we take a look at the essential details you need to know about this fresh-faced new mobile contender.

The new Nokia 700: slimline Symbian Belle elegance

Following on from the Nokia 500, the Nokia 700 is the second new Nokia smartphone to follow Nokia's revamped naming convention, along with its fellow newcomers the Nokia 600 and the Nokia 701. The higher first digit denotes that this is a more upmarket handset than the Nokia 500, while the double zero indicates that it's the first in its line (followed by the Nokia 701).

Let's take a closer look at its other credentials:

Compact
It may be a more upmarket handset than the Nokia 500, but it's certainly not bigger. It's a touch narrower and a millimetre shorter, but impressively it's just 9.7mm thick, making it perfectly designed for a jeans pocket or small handbag. In fact, Nokia calls it the most compact smartphone ever, which is some accolade.

AMOLED touchscreen
The touchscreen is also on the compact side at 3.2-inches across, but with a ClearBlack Display AMOLED panel sitting right up against the Gorilla Glass screen, it promises to offer fantastic picture sharpness, clarity and depth.

1GHz processor
One of the biggest differences we've seen in the likes of the Nokia 500 and the Nokia N9 is the jump in processing power, and here too you can look forward to the oomph of a 1GHz chip whirring away on the inside of the Nokia 700.

NFC
All three of Nokia's Symbian Belle smartphones feature NFC capabilities, and will start to deliver on the technology's potential, offering features such as instant file transfer by tapping two phones against each other, or instant Bluetooth pairing simply by touching the Nokia 700 to the accessory you're looking to connect to.

Camera
The Nokia 700 boasts a 5-megapixel camera, which may not seem like a lot for Nokia users spoilt by the likes of the Nokia N8, but importantly the camera at least is a full focus unit with LED flash, and comes with the ability to shoot 720p high definition video clips too.

Symbian Belle
The newly announced Symbian Belle will be running the show on the Nokia 700, and while we won't be able to get a closer look at Nokia's new OS until the Nokia 700 actually launches, the likes of advanced NFC features, free-form widgets and the clever new status bar certainly have us looking forward to its arrival.

Colours
Black, white, silver... most other mobile phone manufacturers seldom stray beyond the predictable. The Nokia 700, however, will be available in exciting shades such as Coral Red, Peacock Blue and Purple.

Eco-friendly
Bring together the Nokia 700's energy-efficient OLED display, its AC-15 fast charger, the use of sustainable materials in its construction and its efficient use of power and you have a smartphone Nokia is proud to call its most eco-friendly ever.

Battery
Being a real eco-warrier, you won't be surprised to hear that the Nokia 700 boasts some pretty impressive battery life figures despite its small physical size. You can expect up to 7.3 hours of talk time, and a full 465 hours – that's nearly 20 days – on standby.

Memory
The Nokia 700 may be tiny, but Nokia has made sure not to compromise on any of the essentials. Storage, for instance, is covered by 2GB of internal memory plus the ability to add more via microSD card – figures that are on a par with other recent releases such as the Nokia 500.

So what are your initial impressions of the Nokia 700? It's certainly small, efficient and eco-friendly – does that press the right buttons for you? Let us know in the Comments.

I’ve always said smartphones were too large and lacked sufficient battery life. Curse you Nokia! Now I have to run out and buy one of these beauties.
