Developers give Nokia and Windows Phone the thumbs up
Nokia's decision to adopt Microsoft's Windows Phone as its primary smartphone operating system was announced all of seven months ago now, and from day one Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has insisted that we'd see the first Windows Phone-powered Nokia before the end of 2011.
Well, the good news is that plan is very much still on track – in fact, Elop has revealed that the debut Nokia Windows Phone will definitely be on sale before the end of the year, and has revealed more about how Nokia intends to roll out the all-important debut handset on the platform, which will be powered by Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.
Elop is currently in China finalising the device's launch details with the country's networks, but in an interview took time out to reveal fresh details about the first Nokia Windows Phone's global rollout.
“The first Windows Phone devices from Nokias will be in the market in the world in Q4,” Elop said. “We're sequencing the roll-out: it will be available in one country after another after another over time.”
The Nokia boss didn't give any indication of which territories were likely to see the handset first, but did say he was optimistic that it would be a great success based on “the unique capabilities that we're bringing from Nokia” as well as “the quality of the design and the strength of our organisation”.
Later in the interview, Elop elaborated that he believed the competitive advantage the Nokia Windows Phone would offer over existing smartphones on the likes of Android or iOS was its focus on users rather than applications – putting interaction with real people at the forefront of the user experience.
We've already seen signs of this in our interaction so far with Windows Phone and its People Hub, for instance, but it's clearly something Nokia intends philosophy Nokia intends maximising in its finished Nokia Windows Phone.
We've included a video of the interview below – the short intro is in Chinese but the full interview is worth listening to for Elop's comments not only on the first Nokia Windows Phone but also his thoughts on the likes of Qt and Google's decision to buy out Motorola.
