Upgrade your Nokia X6 to Nokia 700

The Nokia X6 has aged well but with so many new Nokia handsets emerging over the past few months, surely now is the ideal time to upgrade. We look at what Nokia X6 owners have to look forward to in the Nokia 700.

The new Nokia 700: slimline Symbian Belle elegance

We can scarcely believe that the Nokia X6 is all of two years old now. It's certainly kept its appeal well, and remains a great phone for enjoying music and video thanks to its generous on-board storage.

But if your mobile contract is running to an end, or you simply think it's time for an upgrade, you'll find plenty to tempt you in the latest generation of Nokia smartphones that are set to go on sale in the weeks to come.

The Nokia 700 in particular makes for a great choice if you're looking to upgrade, so let's check it out as a potential successor to the Nokia X6.

For starters, you'll be impressed by just how compact it is – in fact the Nokia 700 is Nokia's smallest smartphone ever. The screen size is exactly the same at 3.2-inches, but the Nokia 700 is just 9.7mm thick versus the Nokia X6's 13.8mm, and weighs 96g versus 122g. That's a considerable difference when it comes to pocketability – and the Nokia X6 is by no means a bulky handset.

The other good news is that while the screen size and 360 x 640 resolution is unchanged, the Nokia 700's touchscreen is a high-quality AMOLED panel with Nokia ClearBlack display technology, which means superb pictures quality and contrast at all times.

Elsewhere, you can look forward to a serious performance boost thanks to more than double the processing power on tap – the Nokia 700's 1GHz processor should comfortably eclipse the Nokia X6's limited 434MHz chip – while the Nokia 700 sticks to the 5-megapixel camera resolution you're used to from the Nokia X6 but also gives you HD video recording too.

You'll have to live without all that on-board storage you've become used to on the Nokia X6, as the Nokia 700 only has 2GB of fixed storage space of its own, but it does correct one of the Nokia X6's biggest limitations – the lack of a microSD card slot. With the option of removable storage you can add up to 32GB of additional memory on the Nokia 700, all with the added convenience of being able to pull it out and use it elsewhere should you need to.

But we've saved the biggest difference between these two handsets for last, as it's unquestionably the software running on board. We're certainly fans of Symbian S60 5th Edition in the decent range of touchscreen smartphone features it delivers to handsets such as the Nokia X6, but the Symbian Belle running on board the Nokia 700 is, to put it bluntly, in a whole different universe.

The flexibility of six different homescreens, instant access to all your latest notifications, messages, missed calls and the like thanks to the new pull-down toolbar, plus the ability to lay out your homescreens exactly how you want them with resizeable free-form widgets gives a degree of power, control and personalisation the Nokia X6 simply gets nowhere near, and brings you to the very forefront of Nokia's smartphone development curve.

On its own the appeal of Symbian Belle is more than enough reason to make this a no-brainer upgrade, even without the Nokia 700's considerable appeal as a piece of mobile hardware.
