Tank Hero has just been awarded a coveted runner-up spot in the Calling All Innovators awards, so what does this all-action game have to offer that's so special? Let's find out in our Tank Hero review on our Symbian Anna-powered Nokia N8.

Calling All Innovators 2011: The winning apps!

Games come in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes there's nothing like an old-fashioned shooting title that mixes up fast-paced action, the ability to unlock new achievements and weapons, plus of course the opportunity to blow up the bad guys.

Tank Hero puts you in charge of – you guessed it – a tank, and the objective is to blow up opposition tanks in progressively more complex mazes featuring walls and partitions to make things interesting.

The scale of opposition increases too. You start with a single tank against you, but soon the numbers go up, and different coloured tanks offer variations on both speed and weaponry.

However, there's a variation on this basic game style – the Campaign mode – which adds even more high-octane tank-busting action. It's the Survival mode, which lets you select any map you've already conquered in the Campaign mode and face off against ever-increasing levels of enemy hardware in level after level, until you've simply got too much against you to survive.

In terms of controls, we were really impressed by the fact that there are three very different control systems to choose from to suit both your preferences and the size of your touchscreen.

You can either have a virtual D Pad on the left to move your tank around and a screen tap system to fire cannons, or a pair of D Pad to control both the tank direction and the turret direction.

You can even go for a swipe-and-tap system to move around and fire, and the movement physics is excellent, giving you speed variations depending on how you approach the controls.

Overall we can easily see why Tank Hero has received an award in the Calling All Innovators competition. It's fun to play, delivering some classic gameplay elements, but it's the controls that really steal the show, giving you truly intuitive and effortless gaming goodness that's worth the £1.50 asking price in our book.
