One of the big attractions of Symbian Anna is its new rounded icons, so it's a brave theme that proudly boasts of ditching those attractive new icons and going back to a more squared style. But that's Refresh Aqua for you, and we've been checking it out on our Nokia N8.
Nokia N8 running Symbian Anna review
Many themes are based around actual photos – whether just a stunning piece of photography or something that's been digitally altered.
Refresh Aqua, however, is a more graphic-based theme, and its key elements are its striking icon design and its basic, bold use of colour.
In a sense, the icons are actually a mix of the Symbian Anna style and the older Symbian^3 look, as the icons are essentially square but with rounded vertical edges to give them a softer look. The thin white frame running around delivers a pleasing uniformity and consistency that just works, and the result is undeniably attractive.
Similarly, the striking marine blue base colour used – along with a couple of variation shades – is distinctive and visually pleasing, mainly in how it contrasts with other colours on screen. It's exactly the kind of visual realisation you're imagining when you start thinking about an Aqua-based theme, and certainly works for us.
Unlike most themes, the main wallpaper background itself is probably the most subdued element of all, and its subtle pattern and darker blue shade are more a link between the icon style and main marine blue highlight shade than anything else.
But the overall effect looks great, and Refresh Aqua is perfect proof that a theme doesn't have to be complicated to hit all the right buttons visually.
