Sudoku has been popular for about as long as mobile phones themselves, and the two remain popular partners for millions of people around the world. So does the Sudoku Free app work on the Nokia C5-03, or is it just making up the numbers? Let's check it out.

The Nokia C5-03 is a superbly compact and pocketable handset, but nonetheless features a high-quality 3.2-inch touchscreen that's ideal for simple touch-based games such as Sudoku Free.
The game of sudoku itself needs little introduction, but if you really have never come across before, the concept is simple enough.
You're faced with a grid of empty squares, and the objective is to fill the squares with numbers so that no numbers are repeated on any horizontal or vertical lines, or within sub-grids within the main puzzle.
Sudoku Free follows the standard pattern of offering you a choice of 4x4, 6x6 or 9x9 grids, with the effective difference being one of difficulty – the bigger the grid, the tougher it gets.
But beyond that you also have four difficulty levels to choose from, which affects the set of numbers already in place that each puzzle starts with.
As for the job of filling the puzzles, Sudoku Free is painless to work with. Tap on the block you wish to fill in, then tap on the number you want to add from the row of numbers along the bottom of the screen. There's also options to delete the contents of a square, or to undo or redo a move.
Once you reckon you're done, tap the Check button and you'll either get the thumbs up or squares that are incorrectly filled in will be highlighted so you can fix your mistakes.
Aside from the infinite number of randomly generated puzzles, can also plot specific grids yourself and have the app solve the puzzle for you, in case you've come across a sudoku puzzle in the newspaper you can't get your head around, for instance.
As for downsides, Sudoku Free does force you to put up with some ads here and there to maintain its free status, while occasionally the on-screen options are a little small for confident finger presses.
But these are minor issues and otherwise Sudoku Free does its job well – it provides a welcome way to use up a few idle moments with your Nokia C5-03.
