As Nokia went about revealing the Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710, the company talked up many of the new features that Nokia fans can expect to see on the new Nokia Windows Phone handsets. Among them - a new Nokia Music feature called Mix Radio. Mix Radio lets you listen instantly to playlists chosen by Nokia and those tailored by the user. We got to play with it on the Nokia Lumia 710.

On Nokia's new Windows Phone handsets, the Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710, Nokia Mix will be part of the Nokia Music service.

The idea behind Nokia Mix is that listening to music will soon be even easier on Nokia Windows Phone handsets by giving users instant access to the kind of music they love to hear. Kevin Shields, Senior vice president of program and product management for smart devices said that listening to music can be a hassle. A hassle that Nokia aims to eliminate.

"It's such a pain, they have to get a USB cable, sign up for some subscription, get a user account. They want us to just give them the music. Nokia music is an effortless easy way to experience great artists and music though Mix Radio. It's as easy as opening Nokia Music and tapping on one of the tiles," Shields added.

And so it proved. On a Nokia Lumia 710, the service looks great and feels convenient to use. Mix Radio is accessed by tapping on the Nokia Music tile on the homescreen. Once in Nokia Music, simply slide to the right to see visit Mix Radio.

Here you can choose to either listen to playlists badged on genres including hip hip, pop, rock and more, or you can choose to create your own Mix, or playlist based on your favourite artist.

Typing in 'Kanye West' in a search bar for example will automatically pull in artists from the same genre, and style. Predictive search will even finish the job - handy should you forget the surname of an artist, or last part of a band's name. The process was relatively instant. Within seconds we were listening to our brand new Mix. Users can create up to three personalised playlists. Should you choose not to save any playlists, Mix Radio will remembers the last five artists you listened to.

Playlists can be downloaded and stored for regular use, letting you listen to them when offline, anywhere and at anytime you want. And by changing the default playlists each week, the music selection should always feel fresh. As music selection goes, tracks are pulled in from Nokia Music, so there are always millions of tracks to be drawn from.

Interface-wise, the service appears to work seamlessly so far. Menus are bold, bright and easily navigable with a swipe. Everything is never more than one swipe away. And the personalised menu looks great, displaying pictures of artists that change according to your music tastes, as you can see in the gallery below.

The hope is that, on Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710 especially, the service will prove a hit with customers. On this evidence there should be little reason why it won't be. Nokia's Kevin Shields believes it will.

"No charge no signup, it just works. All of these things come for free and only on Nokia. I think it's a great offer."
