Windows Phone 7.5 Messaging appFollowing the release of the Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone at Nokia World 2011, we’ve been taking a look at the great new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS to see what features we will soon all be enjoying on our Nokia Windows Phones. Today we’ve trying out Windows Phone 7.5's Messaging tools.

Windows Phone 7.5 Social Networking: All you need to know

While Symbian Anna and Belle make it easy to send SMS text messages to friends and family, Windows Phone 7.5 continues its stunning run of form by making it easier still. Letting you send SMS and MMS text messages, as well as communicate via Windows Live Messenger and Facebook, all from within a single, easy to use interface, Windows Phone is great for keeping in touch.

Even when compared to Symbian’s excellent messaging tools, Windows Phone 7.5’s Messaging app on the Lumia 800 feels faster, smoother and easier to use. The app is accessed by tapping on the large Messaging tile at the top of the Windows Phone Start screen. This takes you to the Messaging app’s easy two-pane interface, where you can get messaging straight away.

The default screen you see is the Threads pane. This is your main messaging control centre on your Nokia Lumia 800 and all your messages, whether they are SMS texts, Windows Live chats or Facebook conversations, are displayed here. Using Windows Phone 7.5’s great Threads feature, they are all organised by contact, to show you the entire conversations you’ve had, no matter which messaging methods you used.

All your messages are arranged in a stylish and subtly designed list, which you can scroll vertically with a swipe of your finger across the Lumia 800’s 3.7-inch screen. Tapping a message sends its header flying across to the right of the screen with a smooth animation and then opens the message for you to read. You can then easily respond or delete elements of the message – or the whole thing – with a quick click.

To create a new text message in Windows Phone 7.5, you tap the New button at the bottom of the Lumia 800’s screen – illustrated by a + sign. Another animation brings up the large onscreen keyboard and you can get typing straight away. You even have the option to speak your message to the phone and have it convert it to text, although we found your pronunciation has to be near perfect for this to work properly.

With your message completed, you can then use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to add any photos you want to attach from your Nokia Windows Phone’s Photo Album and Camera Roll and then send your message. Once the message is sent, a new thread is created, which updates as you receive responses from your friend’s phone, Facebook account or instant messenger.

From your main Threads pane, you can then also swipe your finger to the left or right to access the Online pane of the Windows Phone 7.5 Messaging app. Here you can see which of your friends are signed into Facebook or Windows Live Messenger and can tap on a person to instantly message them.

And on the occasions that you want to take a break from all the messaging, you can easily disable Facebook messaging for a while or just tap the Status button at the bottom of the screen and change your chat status to unavailable. Letting you keep in touch or enjoy time to yourself however much you like, the Windows Phone 7.5’s Messaging app lets you do it all with ease.

Providing by far the best messaging solution we’ve seen on any smartphone, Windows Phone 7.5 is a great OS and works flawlessly on the Nokia Lumia 800. We’ll be bringing you plenty more Windows Phone 7.5 guides in the weeks to come, so why not let us know if there are any features in particular that you’d like us to tell you more about?

If anybody else is thinking also that there are some missing messaging functions in WP. For example, where are custom folders. I would like to move parts of the tread to the specified folder (call it backup function). I can do it easy in symbian. Am I one and only person on this planet who is making backup of messages to custom folders? Best regards.

I am also one of those people who copy messages to custom folders. Sometimes I receive beautiful messages, so I save them to one folder. When I get those inspiring messages from my loved one, they go to another folder… That is the best thing about symbian smartphones! :)
