We're huge fans of the gorgeous Nokia Lumia 800 and it seems that journalists around the world strongly agree with us. We’ve been taking a look at all that the press has been saying about Nokia’s stunning new smartphone and with high praise coming from all corners, the verdict is in – the Nokia Lumia 800 is the world’s best Windows Phone.
Nokia Lumia 800: What the experts think
One of the latest reviewers to get up close and personal with the Nokia Lumia 800 was Matt Warman, Consumer Technology Editor for The Telegraph. Kicking things off on a great note, he started by saying, “Windows Phone is the best thing Microsoft makes [but] it’s never had hardware that really feels like a truly premium product – until now.”
After a quick thumbs-up for the Lumia’s stunning design and hardware, where he praised the impressive 3.7-inch screen and strong specification, Warman said, “What [the Lumia 800] does, simply, is to give Windows Phone the flagship hardware it…deserve[s]”. And he finished up by leaving no doubt about his thoughts of the Lumia, saying “[The Lumia 800] shows up rival manufacturers, [whose] Windows devices have not had the same style.”
The Guardian’s Victor Keegan has also been checking out the new Nokia Windows Phone and was equally won over by the Lumia 800’s great design and usability, noting, “This is a sleekly good-looking phone with a beautifully engineered curved glass, 3.7in touchscreen in a body extruded out of a single piece of plastic. It is the best looking phone [Nokia and Microsoft] has produced, and…it has the best user interface.”
In particular, Keegan was most taken by the Lumia 800’s excellent camera, saying, “A big selling point for this phone is Nokia's 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens…if you have a camera-phone like this, you don't need a digital camera at all for nearly all purposes.” And he ended his review by calling the Lumia 800, “a beautifully designed…phone” which “will be liked by lots of people.”
Even the Daily Mail got in on the action, with Rob Waugh launching into his review with, “Nokia's sleek new Windows smartphone means business”. And, as with most reviewers, Waugh was immediately impressed by the Lumia 800’s design and touchscreen, saying, “[The Lumia 800] is gorgeous on the outside, courtesy of a moulded-polycarbonate design…and a luxurious-feeling high-contrast touchscreen.”
It’s not just the design that Waugh liked, however; he was just as pleased with the Lumia 800’s great Windows Phone 7.5 interface and camera, noting, “The clean, bright-coloured tiles bubble with information”, “never has scrolling through a settings menu been so exhilarating” and “the camera’s a Carl Zeiss-lensed 8MP beauty”. But it was Waugh’s summary that was most telling of all, as he said, “The best part, though, is watching Apple fans try to catch a peek".
The Lumia 800 has impressed the dedicated technology-press just as easily; the phone experts at Recombu in particular loved the new Nokia Windows Phone, with Recombu’s editor, Hannah Bouckley, calling it, “the best Windows Phone 7.5 phone to date” and “one of the most important phone releases of 2011.”
And it was the Lumia 800’s stylish and resilient design that was one of the main things to win Bouckley’s praise, with her stating, “The Lumia 800 is incredibly well engineered. We’d go so far to say [that] it’s vying with the iPhone 4S for best looking phone on the market and the screen seems far less fragile than Apple’s latest offering.”
And, finally, the team at Engadget delivered one of the most comprehensive reviews of the Lumia 800 to date, with Engadget’s Sharif Sakr calling the new Nokia Windows Phone, “a sophisticated and capable smartphone that melds its hardware beautifully with the Windows Phone OS”.
When checking out the Lumia 800’s great 3.7-inch screen, Sakr noted, “The convex Gorilla Glass screen flaunts some of the best workmanship we've ever seen on a mobile device” and said, “if you've never used an AMOLED phone before, then you're in for a big treat. The key selling point is that [all] black areas on the screen are completely black. Deep, true, outer space black.”
And if that weren’t enough, Sakr’s strong feelings for the stunning Nokia Lumia 800 was best summed up when he confidently stated, “It's hard to contemplate the overall beauty of this device without getting emotional.”
