Adding a great range of useful features to the Nokia Lumia 800, Cool Tools is a handy app that everyone can enjoy. Packing nine easy to use and often incredibly practical tools to your Nokia Windows Phone, you could easily find yourself using Cool Tools every day – and the best part is, it’s free.
While there are many excellent apps that can individually perform the same functions as Cool Tools provides, it is the great one-stop approach that makes Cool Tools an essential download for your Nokia Lumia 800. And while some of its tools are less useful than others, it manages to succeed far more than it fails.

When you run Cool Tools, the first tool you can see is a handy stopwatch. The neatly designed stopwatch icon, clean yet stylish interface and large numbers look great on the Lumia 800’s screen and the stopwatch can easily be started, stopped and reset using two clear buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Swiping to the right takes you to the Countdown tool. With the same subtle look as the Stopwatch, you can tap the screen and enter the time of your required countdown, in hours, minutes and seconds. When the time is up, your Lumia 800 loudly beeps at you, making a handy and portable kitchen timer.
Another swipe to the right reveals the Flashlight tool. With a tap of the Lumia 800’s screen, the 3.7-inch panel lights up with a bright white background to illuminate your surroundings. Perfect for helping you get your key into your front door at night, it can even be set to a dizzying Strobe mode if need be.
By swiping right once again, you can access the Ruler tool. This displays a life-size ruler onscreen, which lets you place the Lumia 800 next to anything small that you need to quickly measure. Units are displayed in centimetres and inches, with a maximum of 8cm or 3-inches visible on the Lumia’s screen.
The next tool in the Cool Tools arsenal is the Accelerometer. This handy app ties directly in with the Lumia 800’s built-in hardware accelerometer and lets you determine the exact orientation of your smartphone on an X, Y and Z-axis. A great tool for home DIY, it can be used as a quick and easy spirit level.
Next up is the Soundcheck tool, which is one of the less useful apps in Cool Tools repertoire. Letting you play back any one of six slightly annoying sound clips, you can use the clips to judge the volume of your Lumia 800’s speaker, and adjust the volume accordingly; a pretty useless and unnecessary function.
The Conversion tool is far more valuable. Letting you quickly convert a range of units, including weights, temperatures, speeds and lengths, this is the kind of app that you could find yourself using on a regular basis. Again the clean interface is a pleasure to work with and makes conversions quick and easy.
But it is the next tool that is maybe the most useful of them all. The Tip tool makes it easy to split a bill when you’re out with friends. You input the bill total, add the percentage you want to pay as a tip and then select how many ways you want to split the bill and each person’s total is instantly calculated.
Unfortunately Cool Tools ends on a bit of bum-note, as the Random tool is a bit of damp squib. All it lets you do is enter two numbers and then click a button to generate a random number between them. We can see its uses in gambling, but otherwise we can’t see ourselves using this tool very often.
While Cool Tools is not a flawless app, its many handy tools make it a great addition to your Nokia Lumia 800. While you may not use all of its features every day, you’re sure to need at least one of them on a regular basis and when you consider the fact that it’s free, there’s no reason not to try it.
Cool Tools is available now for the Nokia Lumia 800 through the Windows Phone Marketplace.
