The Nokia Lumia 800 isn’t just the world’s first ‘real Windows Phone’, as Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said at Nokia World 2011; with a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor inside, it’s also one of the fastest. In the first of a new series, we’ve been pairing it against its rivals in day-to-day tasks and benchmarks, to see which phone wins when it comes to raw performance.
In our first test we pitted the Nokia Lumia 800 against the HTC Radar in a browser face-off, loading everyone’s favourite Nokia website, NokNok.tv. With both smartphones connected via Wi-Fi, the first test was to load the mobile version of the site. The test proved to be a bit of a sprint, since it’s a text-only site and easy to load and it was over in a flash, with the Lumia 800 the clear winner.
The next test was to run the full desktop version of the site, and a bit more of a middle distance challenge, due to the higher amount of resources that need to be downloaded. Hitting refresh on both the Nokia Lumia 800 and the HTC Radar at the same time, the Lumia 800 consistently loaded the page in just under seven seconds, while the HTC Radar took closer to eight seconds.
Here comes the science part: if you don’t believe us as to the Nokia Lumia 800’s performance, we’ve got the statistics to back it up. We benchmarked both the Lumia 800 and the HTC Radar using two browser tests - Sunspider Javascript Benchmark 0.9.1 and Rightware Browsermark. Both are available free online if you’d like to check them out yourselves.
In the latter, where a higher score in the suite of tests is better, the Nokia Lumia 800 scored an impressive 30,998, while the HTC Radar lagged behind with 27,004. In Sunspider, which tests how well a browser handles the commonly used JavaScript language, a quicker response time is better. Here the Nokia Lumia 800 scored 7026.9ms, while the HTC Radar was beaten again with a time of 9012.4ms.
With such impressive scores under its belt, there’s no doubt that the Nokia Lumia 800 is as fast as it is stylish and feature-packed. And we’ll be bringing you more head-to-head speed tests against the HTC Radar all week, so stay tuned and let us know your thoughts.
