The Nokia E5 is a QWERTY-packing smartphone tailor-made for messaging. Its email and messaging talents make it one of Nokia’s best ever phones for business, but you don’t need to work in the big city or own a Saville Row suit to appreciate the Nokia E5 - it’s great for anyone who loves to message. Find out more in our Nokia E5 in our year-end roundup.
When the Nokia E5 launched it came to the fore with replacing the trusty Nokia E72 in mind. Like the Nokia E72, the Nokia E5 is primarily aimed at business users. It has a 2.4-inch screen and a very full QWERTY keyboard.
Naturally it came packing full 3G/HSDPA connectivity and Wi-Fi, letting users connect to their home or office internet connection to access email and browse the web. A generous 32GB storage capacity, when bulked up with a MicroSD card, and a 5-Megapixel camera completed the core features.
Nokia E5 QWERTY smartphone launched
In April of this year we wanted to discover for ourselves how the Nokia E5 keyboard compared to touchscreen alternatives, so we paired it side-by-side with that of the Nokia E7’s. Despite some initial getting used to, we loved the feel of a physical QWERTY keyboard in our hands.
Messaging is a dream on the Nokia E5. Rounded rubber keys give it a nice feel, even if they are slightly cramped together. In our comparison, we also loved touchscreen typing on the E7, so we were pleased to see that both devices delivered satisfying results.

Another comparison had us pitting two QWERTY phones together. We looked at the Nokia E5 alongside the Nokia E6. The E5 is more suited to both consumers and business owners, whereas the E6 is more of a dedicated business handset. The E6 has a bigger spacebar, but the keyboard on the E5 was found to be slightly more comfortable. The E5 is slightly less specced than the E6, but we agreed that both offered excellent value. In May we even named the Nokia E5 as one of the best phones for Skype. That keypad really does come in handy. In fact so enamoured were others with the Nokia E5 that Nokia released a video showing how all you need to stay in touch is a QWERTY keypad and a great battery life. It’s worth a watch.
