Funny how some of the best mobile games feature cute animal mascots. We are of course referring to the ridiculously popular, world dominating antics of the Angry Birds. The penguin-packed Slice Ice isn’t quite on Angry Birds level, but it’s a nice little game that we’ve been playing on the Nokia N8. Read on, and we’ll tell you whether it’s worth a download.
The clue to the nature of Slice Ice’s gameplay is in its name. Penguins are stranded on giant ice blocks, sliding wildly in every direction. You don’t want them to become separated from the rest of their slippery siblings - so it’s up to you to keep them together by slicing the ice in an attempt to herd them up.
You do so by drawing lines in the ice, cutting through the ice in a freestyle fashion till all the penguins have been captured. There’s a method to all of this ice slicing tomfoolery. Like Angry Birds, Slice Ice employs a star system, ranking you up to three stars according to how many slices it took to capture the penguins.
It all sounds easy enough, but even early levels require quick enough reactions and patience to three-star each stage. And that’s where the (mild) longevity is in Slice Ice. It’s a neat little premise, but we can’t help but think that Slice Ice rewards patience more than it does skill.
You could say that there is some degree of skill in that you’ll still need quick reactions to draw the most economic path to victory, but it’s still mostly patience, we feel. Slice Ice remains a nice little game, though.
Thirty levels provided for free to play and perfect ain’t too shabby, but don’t expect extra modes. Slice Ice is indeed a cute and fun game, but once you clear it, don’t expect to revisit it much, if at all once you’ve loaded your Nokia with more games. But for the cost of nada, you may as well give it a try anyway. Slice Ice deserves at least that.
