Nokia N8 passes 1 million uploads on Flickr
The Nokia N8 has passed one million image uploads to Flickr, which is a considerable achievement for any smartphone. We only noticed it had passed this milestone as we were looking to see if the Nokia 808 PureView had started to make an impact on the site.
The Nokia N8 and its 12-Megapixel camera has just been toppled as the flagship cameraphone in the Nokia range by the arrival of the Nokia 808 PureView but it still has a huge following out there as can be attested to by the phone having more than 1 million photo uploads on Flickr. In fact, judging by Flickr’s own figures this number is growing daily.
The Nokia N8 is currently the most popular phone on Flickr among Nokia users for uploads. Interestingly, the Nokia 5800 is the second most popular, followed by the Nokia N95, which shows there are a huge number of older phones being used by people every day!
The Nokia N8 may be the most popular right now but it’s not the most popular Nokia cameraphone on the site. In fact, the Nokia N8 only comes 9th in the chart as Nokia N95 is clearly the most popular Nokia phone on there with currently over 7.6 million image uploads and counting!
Take a look at the Top 10 of Nokia cameraphones uploading to Flickr and you’ll see that it’s a nice little snapshot of the variety of handsets being used. Obviously, the older phones have had longer to build up a bigger portfolio but if you check out the second column ‘Avg. Daily Users’ you’ll get a better idea of how popular some of these phones still are.
Now, it’s worth taking Flickr’s own stats with a hint of a leeway, as the site itself states ‘The graphs are only accurate to the extent that we can automatically detect the camera used to take the photo or shoot the video (about 2/3rds of the time). That is not usually possible with cameraphones, therefore they are under-represented’ so it could be that the actual number is considerably more for each phone. Still, we’re taking Flickr’s word for it and it’s a pretty grand achievement all the same.
OK, we know the detractors will start rattling the Apple tin at this point and we freely admit iPhone has more uploads per device than the Nokia N8. But that’s largely down to Apple having far fewer specific devices, so it’s concentrated uploads. Taken as a whole and you’ll see that Apple and Nokia are fairly equally balanced in terms of the amount of content that is uploaded.
