5 reasons Nokia Lumia 920 display is stunning, with ClearBlack and battery management explored
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with an array of innovative features you won’t find in any other smartphone. Here we take a look at the touchscreen, what ClearBlack means and how it will help preserve battery life.
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a 4.5-inch touchscreen display that is made from curved Gorilla Glass, features Nokia ClearBlack technologies and uses the Nokia PureMotion HD+ but what doe all that mean for anyone expecting to use their Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 device out in the bright sunlight?
Well, it seems the guys over at Nokia Conversations have been taking a look at some of the science you’ll only find crammed into Nokia Lumia smartphones. With the Nokia Lumia 920 being the flagship Windows Phone 8 device of the range, it’s only to be expected it has everything you need.
Nokia revealed that they have an illumination room where their engineers work to improve display visibility under a host of different lighting conditions. This can be seen in the most recent development of ClearBlack, which will be playing a major role on the Nokia Lumia 820 as well as the Nokia Lumia 920, by reducing reflections when out and about, thereby improving screen visibility.
It’s not just the cutting back on reflections, as Nokia has revealed that thanks to the new ‘high brightness mode’ you’ll find that the luminance of the screen by 20 per cent in sunlight conditions. Apparently, the engineers have worked with the LEDs to find out how they work more effectively.
All this extra brightness is bound to have an impact on battery life, however, it seems that due to ClearBlack developments, Nokia engineers reckon you won’t need to use the high-end settings quite as much, stating “Due to low reflectance of the optical stack, our estimate is that typically only 5-10 per cent of the time will you be in extremely bright conditions where you will need this high brightness mode. So in total, it will not be that heavy on the battery.”
This is key as you’ll find that only in extremely bright conditions, such as when outside and in bright sun shine will the high brightness mode be engaged.
The ‘sunlight readability enhancement algorithm’ is another crucial part of Nokia ClearBlack as it allows the display to fine tune itself to produce clearer and crisper even in direct sunlight.
With Nokia offering so much in the way of innovation with the Nokia Lumia 920 we’re bound to see a great deal more about the science behind the screen technology in the weeks to come. We’re excited about what this means for the next-generation of Nokia Lumia devices as the technology is sure to filter down over time.
