Here we take a look at five ways you can add a dollop of personality to your Nokia Lumia and do it all in less than five minutes.

Windows Phone 8: Resize and move tiles

One of the accusations levelled at the old Windows Phone was that the look was quite uniform. With Windows Phone 8 you’ll find you can now personalise the Start screen a whole lot more. For example, you can now choose between three different tile sizes, from small and standard to the wide lozenge.

All you need to do is hold down any tile and you can resize it and then move it around. We’ve found that having a mix of sizes allows you to prioritise those apps you use or get updated a lot, such as email and messaging, while making useful but less frequently used apps smaller.

Windows Phone 8: Lock screen

Windows Phone 8 has done a good deal to improve the Lock screen and allow you to personalise it. Now you can make the text bigger, making it easier to read. To do this go to Setting>Ease of use and select from one of four font sizes.

You can choose five apps to show status updates on your Lock screen. You can choose the obvious, such as Facebook, email and text messaging or Skype, or go a little more off-road and choose game and app updates.

What’s more, you can set one app, defaulted to Calendar, to give you detailed status updates. As with above, you can specify whether you want this to be email, messaging or Skype update.

Windows Phone 8: Wallpaper

To add a new wallpaper go to Settings> Lock screen and choose Background. You can choose a photo you’ve taken, or have it change daily to match the latest Bing background. A new feature that we like is being able to use screens from newsfeed apps, such as CNN or World of Red Bull.

Windows Phone 8: Add apps to the Start screen

Got a favourite app or game you simply can’t live without? Adding it to the Start screen means you don’t need to go rooting around in Xbox Live or swiping to the list of content on your Nokia Lumia.

All you need to do is locate the app and hold your finger down on it. When the dialogue box appears simply elect to pin it to Start.

Windows Phone 8: Choose a Theme

You’re Nokia Lumia smartphone will come with a default theme colour. For example, our Nokia Lumia 820 Red Edition uses the Red theme with Dark background, while our previous Nokia Lumia 900 came with the default Nokia Blue theme.

To change your theme is easy, simply go to Settings>Theme. You can go for a dark or light background but it’s worth bearing in mind that the darker option is better for battery life.

The accent colour allows you to add a little of your personality to your Nokia Lumia. With 20 colour accents to choose from, there is bound to be one that truly appeals to you.

That’s five ways you can instantly add a little more personality to your Nokia Lumia but there are plenty of other ways, such as pinning websites to the Start screen, or even route planners from Nokia Maps. The versatility of the Windows Phone operating system is such that you’ll easily find a look that suits you.
