Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Top reasons to buy this budget Windows Phone 8

nokia-lumia-520-hands-onThe Nokia Lumia 520 is the entry-level model in the current Windows Phone 8 family and can be yours for as little as £99 here in the UK. But what do you get for your money? Here we look at the top reasons to buy the Nokia Lumia 520.

The Nokia Lumia 520 may be a cost-effective solution compared to the likes of the Nokia Lumia 720 and Nokia Lumia 920 but you will find that it still runs the full Windows Phone OS and delivers a great everyday experience. Here we take a look at why we think you’ll love owning this budget smartphone.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Design

The design of the Nokia Lumia 520 is slim and compact. As with the more expensive members of the family you’ll find the design has been kept to the minimum with a single port on the top for the audio jack, a microUSB port on the base and a small hole on the back for the speaker.

While the design is minimal in appearance, the Nokia Lumia 520 very much has a look and feel all its own. Even though it has a 4-inch screen it feels great in the hand, largely due to the slim profile of the device itself.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Covers

Colour is proving the big selling point with Nokia Lumia smartphones – it seems no one can match the striking array of colours on offer. The Nokia Lumia 520 is available in a wide range with yellow, red, cyan, white and black being on offer from a range of retailers. Like the Nokia Lumia 620 before it, the shells are interchangeable, so you’ll be able to personalise your Nokia Lumia 520 to match your mood or you needs, such as one colour for work, one for leisure.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Build Quality

With pricing on the Nokia Lumia 520 starting at less than £100, you may be thinking that compromises have been made on the build quality? Far from it, we’ve found it to be robust ad reliable and will certainly live up to your expectations.

We will concede that the shell isn’t quite as thick as on the Nokia Lumia 620, so if you’re looking for that extra level of protection you may want to consider upping your budget a little.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Screen

The Nokia Lumia 520 has a 4-inch display and is the only model in the Windows Phone 8 family to do so. It comes with the standard 800 x 480-pixel resolution so images look good and sharp.

One feature missing on the Nokia Lumia 620 was the super-sensitive screen we first saw on the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. Well, it’s back with a vengeance on the Nokia Lumia 520, which means you can use the larger screen when wearing gloves outside, for example, or use it with a stylus or fingernail.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Performance

Also like the Nokia Lumia 620 before it, you’ll find a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage tucked away inside the Nokia Lumia 520. You’ll find that Windows Phone 8 loads quickly and smoothly with no signs of lag.

When it comes to apps and games, you’ll find that all current Nokia apps run with ease, such as HERE Maps, HERE Drive and Nokia Music with Nokia Mix Radio. Some games need more RAM to run, so you won’t find things like Temple Run currently populating Xbox on the Nokia Lumia 520. Hopefully the developers will update such games to run on entry-level smartphones.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Camera

The Nokia Lumia 520 shows its budget credentials in the multimedia stakes. Fitted with a 5-Megapixel camera but with no Flash, this smartphone has proved great for taking snaps in good light conditions. What’s more, with support for 720p video recording, you will be able to get some great footage recorded at 30fps from the Nokia Lumia 520.

If you’re looking for proof on how effective the Nokia Lumia 520 camera is then check out our comparison with the Nokia Lumia 620 camera, we think you’ll be nicely surprised how well it handles.

Nokia Lumia 520 guide: Battery Life

The Nokia Lumia 520 may be a budget smartphone but that doesn’t mean you need to compromise on battery life. Packing in a 1430mAh battery that offers up to 9.6 hours of talk time on 3G, 360 hours of standby and up to 61 hours of music playback, you’ll find there is enough juice to keep you checking emails and listening to music throughout the day, while having enough left in the evening for social media and joining up with friends using Nokia HERE Maps.

You may need to check with T-Mobile in the US for that one, I’m afraid.
