Nokia Lumia 520: How to add and change ringtones

nokia-lumia-520-ringtone-01The Nokia Lumia 520 is the entry-level smartphone in the Windows Phone 8 but unlike budget smartphones using rival platforms you’ll find it offers the latest version of the OS and offers the full array of features. Here we look at how to add and change ringtones on your Nokia Lumia 520.

Now, Windows Phone 8 comes with a large array of ringtones built into the device for you to choose from, there are even a few exclusive Lumia tones. What’s more, the Nokia Lumia 520 even defaults to the famous Nokia ringtone.

How to get started with your Nokia Lumia 520

You can choose any of these, or you can use any sound file that will play on your Nokia Lumia 520, as long as it isn’t protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM) and is smaller than 30MB in size. You can even use a sound file sent to you in a text message. To do this, tap and hold the ringtone file and then tap Save as Ringtone.

To add a file of your own you need to attach your Windows Phone 8 device to your PC and add the file to the Ringtone folder before you can choose it using the Settings>Ringtone.

However, being a Nokia Lumia smartphone there is an even easier way to get personalised ringtones onto your Nokia Lumia 520. Nokia Ringtone Maker is an app you’ll find in the Nokia Collection on your phone and can be downloaded for free.

The editing tools on Ringtone Maker are incredibly easy to use and allow you to choose the start, end and length of your ringtone. Once you have it trimmed to the right length then save it as a ringtone. All of this is handled on the phone, with no need for extra software.

Once you have it installed, simply open the app, select your favourite MP3 song, trim it down to the size you’d like it to – the app limits you to 30 seconds at the moment but Nokia is working on a new version of the app to allow you to create 60 second ringtones.

Once the ringtone has been created simply head to Settings>Ringtones and Sounds and choose it from the Custom list. That’s how easy it is to add a custom ringtone to your Nokia Lumia 520.

Back when the app first appeared we created a video using our Nokia Lumia 820 that shows you exactly how to make the most of Ringtone Maker on your Nokia Lumia. The app works in exactly the same way on your Nokia Lumia 520.

If you use Nokia Ringtone Maker you can create ringtones of up to 60 seconds in length, plenty of time to reach the phone and answer. Hope that helps?

  • frankie

How can I increase the length of time my phone rings when I have an incoming call, as it rings for about 3 rings then by the time you have reached the phone you have missed the call, can you help with this?

  • Mikey_Bee

Excellent, glad to hear you got it sorted! Thanks for letting us know :)

  • gary

yeha finally got it, downloaded ringtone maker and played around with computer now ive got it thanks mate

  • Mikey_Bee

If you have made a ringtone using Nokia Ringtone Maker then you can add it as your ringtone from within the app. Custom is part of the same field as the other ringtones just at the top of the list.
If you’ve made a ringtone it’s often worth switching your phone off and on again, as this will often allow it to show up. Please let us know how you get on.

  • Mikey_Bee

Try switching off and on again, it may just be a soft bug. Which cat are you referring to, is this from some third-party app?

  • Mikey_Bee

That’s right, it uses just a short snip as it’s an alert and not a full ringtone

You can alter the colour temperature from cool, through neutral to warm, or alter the colour saturation to get a look and feel that is pleasing to your eye. You can see more here: http://www.noknok.tv/2013/09/26/nokia-lumia-520-nokia-amber-update-looks-like/

@Miket_bee, can u plz tell me whats the concept of Lumia color profile… Its in settings>display….

  • Mikey_Bee

The Nokia Black update (and in this case the GDR3 update) only makes changes to the core OS, which doesn’t cover WhatsApp. You’ll need to contact the app developers for more information.

  • Sanket Chopada

How can I change my WhatsApp tone after updating my Lumia 520 to latest black software update…???

  • Mikey_Bee

Go to the Ringtone on the Customs option then press and hold down on it. A popup will appear with the Delete option. Hope that helps?

  • rexey

how can I delete my saved custom ringtone?

  • IamWill

Yes there is no looping option, that is my point. This something the user should be able to set. This is certainly possible; however, not in the software on the phone at this time.

I called customer service and they extended it to 30 sec. Now the ring tone I have ends about the 26 seconds mark and starts to loop. It stops at the 30 second mark.

  • Mikey_Bee

The default ringtones all have a finite length and there isn’t a looping option that we’re aware of.

  • IamWill

I don’t want to make my own ring tones, I just want to ring for longer than the apparent 15 seconds default. Is that possible?

  • Hazel

Thank you , I am a bit technically challenged so may take a while, but thanks for the reply I will let you know how I get on!

  • Mikey_Bee

If you use the Ringtone Maker app you’ll find that you can set a limit of up to one minute with the slider controls. If you app an MP3 to your Ringtone folder it will play all of it

  • Hazel

How can I extend the length of my ringing on lumia 520

  • Mikey_Bee

You can only change to the tones provided in Windows Phone. After the Nokia Black update, due shortly, you’ll be able to add your own tunes to the text tone options.

  • Eleri

How can I change the text tone to a tone from my music on my Nokia lumia 520?

  • Mikey_Bee

Presently you can only change to the tones provided in Windows Phone. After the Nokia Black update, due shortly, you’ll be able to add your own tunes to the incoming message options.

  • Mikey_Bee

  • Dipuo

  • Dennise

I have ringtones that were downloaded from my previous phone to my Nokia 520. How do I use them as a ringtone?

  • Mikey_Bee

how to set your favorite music as your ring tone?

  • Mikey_Bee

To change ringtones on your Nokia Lumia 520, tap on the Settings option and go to Ringtones and Sounds. The first two options you can change let you choose whether to switch the Ringer and Vibrate features on or off, which you do by swiping the switches left or right.

  • Murray Snudge

Ok thanks – it’s not a big problem as long as I remember to set the vol to 30/30 when I switch on. It would have been nice to set ring vol independent of voice vol but that’s not available. I’ve only had phone for 2 weeks so still learning but enjoying it though!

  • Mikey_Bee

That’s not something we’re away of being possible. Anyone know of a third-party app that will help?

  • Murray Snudge

I have a question about ring vol on 520:- I don’t have a hearing problem but unless vol is set at 30/30 I cannot hear phone ring if it’s in my pocket and I’ve tried all the ring calls. That is ok but if phone is switched off then it defaults to 15/30 when switched on so is there any way to set default to 30/30 please?

  • Mikey_Bee
